  • why? is it just fashionable? i can't work it out - it's like taking away all the advantages of drops without adding any of the advantages of bullhorns.

  • they just look gay......speaking as a mother

  • If you don't like riding on the drop part of drops and never use it but you use the curve bit for climbing it makes sense.

    Bullhorns look shit though.

  • i like 'em but i have a penchant for looking gay..... speaking as a son

  • It's for tricks... your legs won't get caught when leaning forward on a skid. They are way ahead of us in japan!

    Ahah - that makes sense.

  • thats what they want you to think

  • They are espresso dispensers. You just put the water in the bottom bracket, turn up the spin, and the water passes through the coffee in the headset before emerging where you can quickly hold your thermo mug before putting it back in its holder. They're way ahead of us in Italy.

  • only when it comes to espresso...

  • erm...

  • no offense to you though Stef! Obviously you are way ahead!

  • lol

  • rakan If you don't like riding on the drop part of drops and never use it but you use the curve bit for climbing it makes sense.

mebbe. on that red one perhaps you could use the curves for climbing but I don't see anyone riding the hoods at that angle, esp. with no tape on.

  • Arrrrrgh! What is it with people doing more and more ridiculous things with their handlebars?!

First the stupidly narrow flat bars which give you zero leverage but let you get through really really narrow gaps, even ones narrower than your shoulders and pedals!

Now drops, but with the flat bit of the drop gone...

What next? Just aero bars for street riding?

  • eeehhhh What next? Just aero bars for street riding?

    SHIT!

    Rumbled.

    whistles

    Dum de dum de dum.

  • We've done brakeless, next it's bar-less.

  • You can steer with a stem. What more do you need? Wusses.

  • I'm gonna practice me death-grip on the steerer.

Barless will be so last week when we all go stem-less.

  • Stemless is the way to go. If you can't control your bike solely through balancing, you don't even deserve to be riding. Fecking fakers. Only losers bother with things like bars and stems.

  • Loads of couriers and "fixed wheel enthusiasts" have super high saddles and way low bars....apparently emulating track riders, but you won't see anything like that at the track in reality......sometimes they turn up at HH, but their positions are so extreme they can't even reach the drops and they wiggle round with their hands on the tops wondering why they can't keep up....if you can't reach the drops why have them?....purely to pose....if you wanna go fast, do tricks, be comfortable....get ANY handlebar system that suits you.

can't we call them "bends" instead of drop handlebars? like when I was a nipper.

the stupidly narrow flat bars which give you zero leverage but let you get through really really narrow gaps, even ones narrower than your shoulders and pedals!

I chopped my flats narrower because of experience....it does work... the side of a car is not a vertical flat panel.....a car at shoulder height is narrower than at handlebar height...meaning more room for your body than at bar height....the same with most cars at pedal height too....bars are often at a similar height to mirrors, which is why it makes sense to have narrow bars....but what about your hips / waist I hear you cry? well, when I'm traffic dodging after I've picked my line through a tight spot between two mirrors I often twist sideways or stand on pedals to get my body through those 10-12 inches...try it you'll see it works.

I've got narrow flats with mountain bike bar-ends...get plenty of leverage...don't skid much coz my gear's a little high...but when I do I find the flats are good for that... a nice platform to lean thighs on and the bar ends to hold onto in front of you..

can't we refer to our bikes as our "wheel" like in the days of Major Taylor?....Winston's wheel...sounds great!

  • Steed.

Bikes should be steeds. We have stables, why not steeds. We play polo, and on such fine steeds.

  • and wheels are "hoops"

  • eeehhhh What next? Just aero bars for street riding?

Legend Graeme Obree riding a TT with only aerobars, no bullhorns:

  • bikes are bikes

  • kowalski We've done brakeless, next it's bar-less.

    Been done: http://www.snackfight.com/archives/000144.html
Bar-less, brakeless descent of Stelvio pass, AVERAGING 80kph..
