Stef
velocity boy My name is as my username.
Perfect example of lugged frame with a head looking good...
Don't get me wrong Davids bike looks good but personaly think being lugged it would look better with a quill, more inkeeping.

We would all do things different on our own dream bike build.

eeehhhh 1/8th is probably more popular because it's what is used on the track and therefore "proper" size chain. I think it's a bit peculiar to be honest.
Personally I'm a 3/32th guy... Wider selection of chains, parts. More people use it, therefore cheaper. Cheaper tools, as well.
Which 3/32 tools exactly won't work on 1/8th chain. Chain whip maybe? Chain tool?

yes but a a 1/8th chain tool will work with a 3/32 chain

From a purely asthetic point of view I'd have to agree with those that say go for a quill stem, from a practical point of view I'd always go for a stem with a removeable face plate, possible with a quill stem, much more common with an aheadset stem.
You don't say which bars you're thinking of using, both for asthetics and ergonomics may I suggest you have a look at Nitto, some of their stuff gets pricey but it's all gorgeous, you can check them out at http://www.hubjub.co.uk .
Also have a look at this;
it's a track stem Nitto do, it's a quill stem but the shaft is flipable meaning you can have it angled down or up, IMHO rather nice but unfortunately only available in a limited number of shorter lengths.
You asked eariler who Chris King was, they're an American manufacturer who make some great hubs and arguabley the finest headsets money can buy, they're both mechanically sweet, last for ever and look gorgeous to boot. Got to be worth considering, in either their threaded or threadless form, bearing mind the general quality of the other parts in your build.
Good luck and enjoy.

My lugged frame is being built 1" threaded.
bicycle fibre, what persuaded you to go lugless on yer Mercian?
I think threadless would look better on a lug-free frame.

that nitto quill looks very nice, and the bars well your totally right they look fantastic.
do you reckon the quill would be worth buying, to go with some nitto bars ? -
• #66
would the shorter length quill bring the bars closer to me, and would that keep me more uprite.
i do worry that i am damaging my posture ,but maybe that will change when i get my mercian ? -

i reckon the decision to go lugless is due to the fact that i am a minimalist freak , and lugs may crowd the asthetics ? -
• #68
how common are 1" aheads can anybody point me in the direction of some ?
-
• #69
velocity boy I like you. You're as nuts as I am.
i am clinically bonkers ,wahoo im ridings a bicycles. -
• #70
i'm a minimalist freak too but i'll go with lugs on a steel frame any day. just don't paint the luglines and get one colour. they look better in a sense than TIG welding because there won't be any of those smudgy weld at the joints. you can get away with that sometimes but if you really look closely you'll always find them.
see velocity boy's yellow bob jackson or rakan's white bike (both have pics on the forum) if u're not convinced about what i say.

Unless we're talking fillet-brazing, lugs look cleaner.
Get on the phone to Mercian, change the order to lugs and 1" threaded.
Order a Nitto quill and some 123's (chrome, natch).
Sit back and wait 20 weeks.
Ride and enjoy.
In fact, stop worrying, get it built and get on it!

Anyone know where I can get grips like these?
-
• #73
Bicycle Fibre how common are 1" aheads can anybody point me in the direction of some ?
They're not as common as 1 1/8", but there's still a modicum of choice - a fair number of roadies use 1" threadless forks. Obviously, Chris King do one, and it's lovely. Campagnolo do a loose-bearing one, too.

those grips are made by oury. use google

My Soma is 1" Ahead. It's quite easy to get 1" steerer forks, 1" ahead. My Raleigh is 1" threaded with a cheap stem.
I will go ahead 1-1/8 on all future bikes (I like modern looking stuff.. "retro is like so like dated, ya!") unless I get a deal no an older bike in which case I'll just deal with 1" threaded. Ahead all the way. So much easier to deal with. Tonnes of stems and forks. Don't flare your steerer tube. Don't get rusted in. All the ones I've seen have removable face plates. Flip-able so you have two angles per stem. Blah blah.. etc etc..
Sorry I presumed that your frame would be lugged being mercian (I always think of classic mercian track bikes), if it is not lugged go for what either it's all good Ahead maybe looks better on a lugless frame in some cases. I am rambelling cause I am in a bad mood ignore me . Sorry.
Lugged looks fine with one colour or two and vica versa. Look in fgg for ideas.
