  • here is the true definition of a courier from moving target posted by bill today ( oh and by the way did bill really tell her to forget about delivering the parcel ???? )

Sarah Jane was hurt in a collision today, and badly bruised. She is apparently ok, according to Kamil and Selim who went to Tommy's A & E.

The funny part is that she got the ambulance to stop at JWT to deliver her last parcel....!

Even after I told her to forget about the stupid parcel.

  • ffub "camo knicks, big white sunnies" eh?
"stickers on his frame" good way to cover a shitty paintjob. what's that got to do with being a messenger?

It was actually a reply to a "fakenger" quote, but carry on..

  • I know, I was asking why that makes him a fakenger, that is why stickers on your frame is trying to emulate a messenger. Never mind though.

  • Guess it's more common for couriers to tape up their bikes than the simple folk.
No fscking way I'd cover my bike in tape. But I don't have to lock up outside random buildings all day.
I do like the diagonal green taping job (I think) on one of the Bridges ride bikes.. the one that goes up the seattube and carries on up the seatpost. Cool.

  • dicki ( oh and by the way did bill really tell her to forget about delivering the parcel ???? )

F*** you, dicki, what kind of c*** do you think I am?

    Here's what happened:

SJ was heading to JWT from Soho, a run that should take less than 15 mins. After 25 mins, I began to get concerned (believe it or not, I worry if a rider is late calling in - partly because they might be flaking off, mostly because I worry that something might have happened to them, and they might be lying in the road covered in blood). I called her on the radio a couple of times. No reply. Then I called her on the phone a couple of times. No reply.

After a couple of minutes she called me on the phone, very distressed and confused. She wasn't sure where she was. Some bystanders spoke to me and told me they had called an ambulance. Then she spoke to me again and was talking about her delivery and how she still had it. I told her to forget about the stupid parcel, that I couldn't have cared less about it. Which was the truth. It was her idea to get the ambulance to stop at JWT. I would never ever even contemplate prioritising a delivery over a rider's medical attention and neither would my boss, come to that. Once a rider is hurt the ONLY thing that matters is making sure that everything that can be done to help that rider is done.

I bitterly resent you even suggesting such a thing.

  • Depending on how much work I get when I leave the paper and go full-time freelance, couriering is one of the considerations I've got as a job to supplement if I'm not getting any photography work.

    Now that is dedication!

  • It's also nuts as Bill says. She was probably in shock and that's why she was still thinking about her job and the parcel. I'm surprised the ambulance folk let her do it. It's impressive, but only in the way that a hero at a hold-up is impressive, it's also slightly silly. The safety and care of the cyclist down is way above every other thought or action, I can't imagine anyone who's ever been a cyclist, let alone a courier themselves, would ever put anything other than the cyclist first... except possibly the bike.

  • It's weird how you react when you are in shock, when I broke my collar bone and fractured my skull I was laying in the hospital bed unable to move my spine and I was texting freelancers to cover for me. When I got the all clear I rang my boss saying I could probably make it in and do some editing. Of course he told me to stop being so fucking stupid and go rest for a month.

That's not very nice is it?

  • i was being sarcastic as was bill

  • Yeah right. Sarcastic.

  • hah! sorry guys i'm a bit bored, waiting for the courier to turn up, watching the tour the france....boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring.

  • Buffalo Bill Yeah right. Sarcastic.

    haaaaaaaaaaaa

  • did it for a couple of months between jobs once. loved it. unfortunately the wilkinson exchequer couldn't sustain it.

  • Bill - is couriering full-time only? Or do you have people just doing a few days a week?

  • Me, I don't do at all anymore (sadly). Lots of people do it part-time, but most aim to do 5 days.

  • Right. Just doing bit of research for when I go freelance. Cheers for the advice.

  • is it worth doing at the weekend or is there no work?

  • 85 to 90ish (London). Loved it for the first few years. Glad to quit by the end.

  • I'm a bit puzzled really why people want to do couriering part time :S

It's bloody hard work, dangerous and there is little work available because of faxing, faster net connections etc...

If people are that desperate for money work part time in a shop or something, get paid £5.35+ per hour and ride to and from work every day instead. Then go out again in the evening!

Btw, I've never been a messenger and never will be. I ride to a) stay healthy b) tinker with my bike c) get about easily and d) vent aggression and stress!

  • eeehhhh I'm a bit puzzled really why people want to do couriering part time :S

I'm toying with the idea of doing it for a little while. I haven't got much else to do at the moment, wouldn't mind a bit of extra cash. But I don't want to sit inside all day. Having worked in a shop in covent garden for a year, i have no idea why anyone would want to work for £5.35 an hour feeling your brain cells slowly disappearing as life gets more and more meaningless.

edit// and i just got an interview with a company i've never heard of...

  • I need a job that's pretty flexible that won't clash too much with my photo work which is completely erratic. Shops genrally are pretty strict with the hours they want you too work.

  • pimping is the answer, flexible and good money.
