velocity boy There's a big difference between a campaign to write to MEPs (why would it be European Parliament btw?) and a 'debate' in which emotive and silly terms like "red Ken", "Tory fop" and the virtues (or lack of) of the Evening Standard are being bandied about. One has a lot of value, the other is hot air.
But the beauty of forums is the hot air!! If we had a load of academic political insight it would kill the discussion dead because non of us give a shit.... This way, with everybody damning each other's views and arguing we get more discussion done, and get to have a laugh..... I don't think we need be too serious - let's have a hot air blast and then carry on.... :-)

Buffalo Bill
Does that mean that if I posted a thread on this forum asking people to write to their MEPs about blind-spot mirrors for HGVs you would sink the discussion because it was 'political'?
That's a bike safety issue. It has nothing to do with which candidate you want to vote for.. just because the letter is addressed to a 'tician don't make it a "political discussion".
So having written to the MEP and received a reply that s/he was voting against the legislation that you favoured, you then wouldn't post back to the thread this information, with the note that you would be voting for a candidate who had promised to support it?
A comment along the lines of "my MP doesn't support bike safety legislation X" on a bike forum seems sensible. We are not talking about random polly bashing, tory this, Eton public school liberal lala whatever.
Dave's just said it better above anyway so I'll just stop. Discussion like this is better at the pub anyway..

That is an outrageous suggestion, which I bitterly resent, and I shall be complaining to my MP forthwith.
(Oh wait - he's been suspended for smoking cigars behind the bike sheds)

The statement "I'd like to be a fly on the wall for that conversation" wasn't invented whilst flies were flying around the middle of the room now was it?
Any more mistakes like that aidan and you'll be moved to aidan #2 status.. -

Godwin's law.
got answers, even if they're out of pandoras box. Was just interested to see what people thought on the cyclists side of it, not so much all the other bubblewrap that accompanies topics such as 'mayor', 'voting' and the like.
