I'm looking at my new creation, but I don't want to post a picture of it.

...But let me just say, if that's a lo pro, then mine requires an entirely new classification.. haha

  • pic pic pic asm now

  • Jesus, someone's had too many skittles today. I'd love to take a picture max, but I don't own a camera.

  • Hi guys.
This is my first post on this site and I am still brand new to fixed.
I'm currently building up an old Raleigh 12speed which has had a new coat of paint.
Can't decide whether to run SS or fixed (especially after scaring myself sh*tless by shifting the chain and locking up the first time I took it out)
nor can I decide on drops or bullhorns.
Anyway, can't wait to get it built and get some pics on.
    Cheers all

    Owen

  • go fixed...it will change your life!

Just concerned about the rear wheel sliding forward again.
It has those forward facing, semi-vertical dropouts, so can't fit a chain tug!

    Slight overclaim Aido?

  • You have nightmares?

i think you're being harsh on yourself, you did a good job with your make-up!!

Yes you can! Surly chain-tugs work with forward facing drop outs, and i'm sure others do, as i've personally used surly ones. 25 quid tho.

I also suffered from shifting the wheel in the dropouts with SS. It's just because you need to tighten the nuts more. Are the wheels QR or track nutted?

QR: Tighten the fuck out of them.

    &buy a surly tugnut, that'll ensure no shiftage. :)

  • Hi powenb, welcome.

Most people riding conversions with forward facing drop-outs don't run chaintugs. They are good but not essential by any means. You should be keeping an eye on the chain tension for a bit anyway if your fitting a new chain. Oh, and use a longer spanner if your not tightening your nuts properly.

The biggest pain with running forward facing drop-outs is they tend to be rather short so i have to run a half-link in the chain. I hate messing with chains.

  • Because lo-pro frames are so this season, my new bike (my face remains as ugly as ever, so I shan't inflict it on you again):

  • QR: Tighten the fuck out of them.

Caution ! QRs should never be over tightened.

Many years ago on Edgeware road I unlocked my hideous cyan blue Marin mountain bike, put my wheel on - tightened the quick release up really really tight (as I did in those days) and then with the QR about as tight as I could humanly get it (by winding the lever !!! ), I put my foot on to the QRs lever to close it (as I also did in those days) - the lever was pointing up and 'closed' was straight down - so I stood down on the lever forcing it closed with all my body weight . . .

There was a very loud and short cracking noise as the lever went limp - the QRs steel spindle had sheared off and - literally - 'fired' the non QR side across Edgeware road (4 lanes !) and put what appeared to be a bullet hole in the window of an establishment I would rather not name - but let's just say it's the sort of place that has security guards and bullet proof windows.

The staff came running out looked at the 'bullet hole' and then looked at the traffic, presumably to see if they could catch the number plate of the car that had just done the 'drive by'.

I slowly walked my bike away with a loose wheel.

If those things go, they really go.

    Thanks for that.
How can I fit them to forward facing drop-ous?

Also I am running track nutted hubs, I didn't want to over tighten them!! Obviously I should have done them up a lot tighter thougth.

    Cheers

  • powenb: Basically, the tugnut sits on the back of the drop out, at the same angle as the dropout. when you tighten it it will pull the wheel towards the back of the dropout.

    SUPERB!! ;-)

OK, I really want a lo pro bike. I bid on a couple of Fort's but was beaten both times... Who, except for Geekhouse, makes them these days? Any pointers would be gratefully accepted!
