  • The first Paris-Nice wine was in 1989.

Is it ready to drink yet?

  • I'm currently listening to a really good 5live special about the doping culture

    http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/5live/5lspecials/5lspecials_20130430-1607a.mp3

It's from April so I'm sure many of you have listened already, but worth a listen if you haven't. No new revelations to anyone well read on the subject but some interesting first hand accounts from Hamilton, Bassons, Emma O'Reilly, Dick Pound etc.

Any recommendations for others' worth a listen?

'89 is a decent vintage. If you want I do have a rather good Moulis-en-Medoc from 1989 called Bel-Air Lagrave. Moulis is the commune immediately adjacent to Margaux but has no classed growths but does make some serious wine. This estates neighbour's are Chateau Chasse-Spleen and Chateau Poujeaux, so it is in good company. £25 a bottle, can deliver anywhere in the UK. Maybe I could wrangle a forum discount....

  • I'd like to hear Jamie Burrow's story of his time in Lance's team and why he chose to end his career comparitively early given his climbing talent, is it out there?

When I spoke to him he said he was too young and basically thrown in the deep end and wasn't prepared for it. At the time I thought he meant training load but maybe he was referring to the 'dark side'. #vader

  • Everyone in the peloton pre-Cadel should be struck off the record books, blended and scattered around the mountains (not near farm areas - we wouldn't want contaminated steak now would we?). Fire up the wood chipper!

This is going to be interesting. I expect Fat Pat is going to be concerned about this too.

  • Bet Hein isn't going to be so quick on the draw with the lawyer's letters now it's LA casting aspersions.

    Popcorn at the ready.

I've also just picked up Tyler Hamilton's book which should be an interesting read.

  • $3m settlement made to avoid testifying tomorrow in Acceptance Insurance case against him

  • Isn't settling pre trial fairly common? Is it to avoid testifying, or just to avoid litigation risk / cost?

  • Can be either or both. In LA's case, I'm pretty sure he's now reluctant to give evidence under oath which is either perjurious or contradicts previous sworn evidence, making a suit for perjury in previous cases a slam dunk for the state prosecutor.

  • Also, if he gives evidence under oath then he will indeed have to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. In that case, he loses one of his big negotiating cards with USADA/WADA/UCI for a reduced ban, which he's so obviously angling for. There are lots of reasons for him to settle, and precious few to keep fighting. Particularly when you're Public Enemy No.1 and given the Merkins' propensity towards jury trials.

  • if he gives evidence under oath then he will indeed have to tell the truth

He didn't seem to believe that last time he was in court :-)

'Man, I'm that busy talking to lawyers and going over things that have happened, I can't remember what I have and haven't said. You spend a day in a room with a team of lawyers. It's like 24-hour root canal."

Poor Lance. Life gets tricky after you spend half of it living a lie.

  • I have been wondering how Lance is reasoning. He always states he isnt the kind of guy to name names - as he is a "stand up guy" - not like his backstabbing former teammates. But as I see it, he is saving all of the information he knows, which one can only assume includes names, for a negotiation with USADA/WADA to get a reduced ban so that he can compete again and make money with possible endorsements when competing in triathlon again.

It is like he is holding on to this last little bit of dignity which he thinks he has - by saying he wont name names - only to have that as his only leverage in getting a reduced ban.

  • ^ Yeah, he seems to prefer to bully people in private.

    Allegedly.

  • I have been wondering how Lance is reasoning

I think a thing which is weighing heavily on his reasoning is how to resolve all his disputes with money but not time. At this stage, everything which avoids his having to stand up in court and give evidence under oath will be done, because settlement just costs money, but perjury can land him in gaol, possibly for a significant period.

  • some sort of apology

  • Grammatically incorrect.

  • Raised half a billion?

Not all of it went to fight cancer though, did it...

  • He did nowt to fight cancer. He 'raised awareness'. Half a billion dollars to make people aware that cancer is a bad thing. And get his private jet paid for.

  • It was a brilliant scam; set up .org and .com Livestrong organisations and have the charity one buy huge amounts of advertising from the for-profit one.

Does anyone know if the "Wheelmen" book goes into the finances of Livestrong(s)?

  • I think Armstrong only smoked 'reefer' Hendrix was the bigger doper.
