  • The WTB Exposures come in 700x36, which might be worth a look? A very decent tire, though get the durable casing if possible.

  • That makes more sense.

I'd still find another tyre though. There is plenty of choice out there at the moment. As long as you get something decent you'll never know what the difference would have been.

That way you don't even have to mess about with adjusting the existing mudguards.

  • Thank you I’ll have a look.

  • Oh yep. Didn’t see those before. Would be nice in a silver colour but black is ok too. I wonder if the section that goes between the chainstays will fit in my frame. If so then they could be a good option.

  • You mean another 35? Even with the current Kenda 35s and the SKS mudguards there’s still a bit of rubbing. It’s very tight. I’ll try the 38mm Vredestein Aventura (none of the reviews I read had anything bad to say about them), and then some new guards to fit them. Agree that it’ll be nice to see the difference with how they feel. I’ll try the Kendas until the Vredesteins arrive.

  • Swapped in the 650b wheels for winter. Delighted to be able to report that the SKS Chromoplastic 50 guards, fitted exactly for the 700c wheels (32-622 tyres), fit the 650b wheels (47-584 tyres) without modification.

As a result I have a new and unused front and rear Raceguard surplus to need, £20 posted anyone?

  • I seem to have a mudguard or two without the mounts. Guess I got a bit excited donating parts to the local store.

Anyone got a spare sks 700c front mount. Probably Bluemels. Can the mount kits be bought separately?

  • I'll have a rummage in my parts bin, but I can already tell you without checking that SJS cycles will have 'em.
After checking, I can confirm they do for four stays+one pair of the front safety mounts at £14.99 before postage.

Have spare SKS Secu clips, otherwise Condor are always good for spares.

  • Thanks both! I reckon that SJS spares kit will do the trick.

I might even get myself one of those moto style MTB front mudguards for the Surly - no foot overlap but reduces some of the face spray from wet roads.

  • Did someone say front mudguard and surly?
One of the lovely things about surly forks is the huge amount of mounting opportunities and clearance!
Extra mudflap made from inner tubes glued together to give it some weight and touches ground at still. Keeps feet incredibly dry and chain clean. Extra long front made from old mudguard screwed on and stabilised by front rack. Getting over the brow of the front wheel is a game changer to avoid Belgian toothpaste. Also keeps Dynamo light clean.

  • My Surly has flat pedals because I ride midfoot position, so my already large feet stick out further than most. On the Surly I might get away with a full length front mudguard but I've never bothered with them because they interfere too much. I guess I could try the one my partner is trying to install (that I need mounts for) and if it's not too much of an ass I could buy another set for the Surly. Mostly it's the face spray that's annoying without a front guard but I'm used to being covered in shite on my rides.

  • I'm used to being covered in shite on my rides

Can't relate. The c. two weeks I spent without a front guard on my Stayer were enough for me, full guards and flaps on everything!!!

  • The SKS spares from SJS weren't really long enough for either bike. Mine makes sense, it's a 29er with fat rubber.

I thought they'd be fine on the Sequoia but the mount holes are forward of the fork thru-axle OR Spesh use much shorter mounts (see photo) (there's also a set of holes on the inside of the forks, presumably for some kind of hidden mudguard mounts?

Anyway, long may the soggy feet continue!

  • Dammit, sorry, dud tip! Though I can claim exceptional circumstances due to Specialised and their weird mounts this time ☺️
The ones inside the fork legs look like those Mason spec tbh…

  • It's not your fault. Her bike does have a normal looking mount

It was only on closer inspection I spotted the hole in the back of the fork which makes me think the outside hole near the axle is meant for their PlugPlay mudguards. I'm still not sure though.

    Mason sell SKS mudguards
    https://masoncycles.cc/products/sks-longboard-mudguards

They're called Bluemels and/or Longboards but they have the short stays rather than the long ones (mounted on Mason 3d printed mounts) that I've used on all my other bikes. Do the SKS short stays have another name coz I can't find them on SJS as a spare part.

  • "mid blade rack mounts" ?

  • Dunno tbh!!! I suspect the only way would be to either ask SJS about the part they sell, or ask Mason, or both?
I suppose a Mason owner might be a better gauge. How long are the stays you received? The rear stays on my Bluemels come up as c.320mm, and I cut around 20mm off when trimming them for a 700x28c tire on my Raleigh.

  • SJS say they're 350-360mm. I could go for the Raceblade-style wrap around option but I'd prefer normal/proper mounting, especially since the fork already has holes and stuff for it.

  • I guess a 29er MTB tire starts at 55mm, so you would always have been short. The raceblade ones are fine I guess but they’re also so so unattractive IMO!
This is coming from the man who has this on one of bikes tho….

  • They were bought for the grrl's bike not mine, I just wanted to see where they'd fit on mine. I've never really run front mudguards due to the toe overlap and my traffic dodging requirements.

I was thinking of getting one of those moto style ones for the front fork, just to reduce some of the spray since every ride I do now seems to be in the pissing rain. The rear I have pinched of her bike and she's got my old one.

For her front guard, I'm going to look around some more and try to find those shorter "mid fork" mounts, whatever the hell they're called.

  • Does anyone know why Bluemels come with 2 struds with the plastic connection bit and 2 just steel?

  • Yeah, the plastic ones are easy-release ones meant to go on the front, in case something gets jammed in (assuming that a front wheel jam would result in OTB, but a rear wheel would just lock and skid).

  • Interesting! I would've never thought of that, cheers!
