Mudguards

  • Has anyone drilled out the hole on PDW mudguard qr fitting system to work on track axles?

  • Anyone used the Velo Orange stainless guards?

I had a set of the ali ones but cracked them after not very long, wouldn't go ali again I don't think.

I would just go with GB as I have a set on my Pompino and they are really nice but they are either 40mm or 50mm and really I think I need a 45mm guard as I've tested with a bit of a broken 45mm SKS longboard which a) just fits in the frame and b) just gives me the tyre clearance I want.

  • Yes. But I was only looking to get it big enough to accept the M5 for a Goldtec hub. Jot for a track axle.

It was a PITA. The metal is quite thin and deforms as you try to enlarge the hole. Maybe if I had a proper pillar drill it would have gone smoother.

Not 100% sure there is enough material on the PDW adapter drill out for a full track axle. There is a Dia Compe option that might be more suitable. It needed no modification to work with my Goldtecs but the material is still really thin.

  • Found these that are 10mm

  • Looks good, what size tyre are you running?

  • Think they were continental cyclo-cross speed 35mm, they came out at 33 or so but even then there wasn't enough mud clearance...

Got 38mm g one in there with no guards atm. Not sure what my winter plans will be though

  • forum approved 50mm+ guards for disc brake bike?

I've ordered some 53mm bluemels but now reading they are a nightmare with disc brakes - still have the opportunity to cancel the order for something else.

  • Why are they a nightmare? Depends where the mounting points are but may just have to bend the stays or use some spacers at the mount to clear the caliper.

I’d prob go for guards that are 60/65mm wide for 50mm tyres

  • Where are you reading that? In my experience modern SKS guards come with spacers which should be enough to get you clearance for discs, but you never know I guess.

  • I remember fitting them to my gfs hybrid and involved quite a lot of bending/swearing which I'm sure ended up weakening the fittings (most have snapped). I did not consider spacing them out as I'm a dunderhead, that seems like the best solution . Tyres are 45mm so hoping 53mm should be enough.

  • I've got 45mm bluemels on my disc brake bike - there are some issues clearing the calipers on the front, but I just bent the stays. the mounting point on the one side looks like it will rub on the caliper but shouldn't be subject to much movement so I'm not worried

  • Some advice please. Are there any guards that would fit a childs Giant Arx 24? There are mounts so I'm after full guards rather than MTB clip ons if possible.

  • Anyone has the front extension part or know where I can get some for the SKS raceblade long? Merlin cycles have screwed me over and needing some for the winter.

  • There's a chance I do, will need to climb up into the loft to have a look. Watch this space.

  • Front mudguard option for this bike?

  • Crud catcher

  • But still get wet i mean full mudguard

  • Rear has mudguard eyelet so maybe i can hack that near Seatube but front one is pretty hard cant see any on the internet

  • I have a similar fork (in 700c) and I went with axle runners and longboards. Not sure by the picture if that one has a bolt at the front or back of the crown though and you obviously need that for full mudguards. Could always drill it I suppose.

You could do P clips or hose clamps on the legs instead of the axle runners either I guess?

  • P clip is definitely needed but how about on top area theres no whole for u brake caliper to mount it

  • I don't know about that fork but mine had a threaded hole at the back of the crown (I'm guessing for mudguards even though there was no eyelets at the dropouts). Ijust put the Fork hanger bit on there. It's definitely not for a rim brake to be mounted.

If there's no hole you could drill one through one side and mount a nut and bolt through it?

  • Go straight to bodge thread & collect 200 points, that's a top idea (unless carbon steerer)

  • Yes boss rhank you

  • LaMadamme managed to roll over an empty coke can with our Bullit yesterday. It buckled around the rear wheel and got sucked in between the wheel and mudguard. Totally smashing the guard and the stays.

I can only seem to find the SKS sets offered online and not rear-only solutions. Have alternatively also been looking at a set of metal guards but haven't found any for the front wheel?

Would actually prefer stainless or metal guards, anyone have a tip for me?

edit: Velo Orange has a 26" and 20" model, but no need for 2 sets. Anyone after a fender kit for a Bullit? :)

Buy the 26" alloy set and trim/re-radius the front. Works great!
