  • They're OK, but they get rather brittle if it's really cold, and then they crack. I need to replace the flap on my winter trainer, as I caught it on the ground hanging the bike up in very cold conditions, so it's now got a big tear across it.

  • Any tips on bridging the gap between the rear brake bridge mount and the brake bridge itself?

The clip mount on my 55mm SKS does not sit tall enough to reach the mounting hole on my new Disc Trucker. Are there any "tall" brake bridge mounts available?

  • How far off is it? Any chance you could cut out the slot a little more?

  • Nah, too far sadly. I need one about a cm or so taller

  • But srsly.
Is the hole vertical or horizontal? If vertical, use some kind of alu tubing to bridge the gap along with long bolt. If horizontal, l-bend a piece of metal between the two.

  • Yeah. I think it'd going to need something like this

  • Do problem solvers make anything. I know they do a widget for the same issue on forks

  • No sadly. I looked at their site and saw nothing. I suspect I have one of these knocking around and can salvage one of parts to make the extension I need.

  • Got any of those rack extension lying around? that exactly what I use as it's a lots stiffer, LBS should have some for you to buy, I know Evans does.
    The SKS mudguard bridge you linked isn't stiff enough to withstand the amount of flex (I found out the hard way);

    (pictured is the Thorn version).

  • Ooh.Ta Ed. Much appreciated.

  • I prefer one piece bent to accomodate the two contact points, eliminating those ^ clamps that tend to rattle. Pop a hole in the right place on the fender and use soft washers to prevent excess strain.

  • silly question, i have some SKS Raceblade Long and the bracket on the back that goes under the caliper has snapped twice. Is it too tight?

  • Them's fightin' words! I ride 2.35" tyres on my commuter. Vert ramp tyres. >1kg each. :)

  • Yeah, they're shit. They don't come with the dropout bolts, or the stay bolts or the instructions. Luckily I saved the mounting hardware from the Bluewhatsit that was destroyed by the rear-ender.

Doesn't matter anyway because they don't fit on the Inbred. At least not with the balloon tyres I'm running. That's 7 mudguards I own doing nothing and back to the old faithful rat tail...

  • Going to be running 50mm 650b G-One speeds on my Surly Disc Trucker. Are GB 700c 60mm guards my best bet? @edscoble I think you have these guards on one of your bikes??

I assume I'll have to do a bit of trimming / bending to get 60mm to fit near the chain stays?

  • If you're passing my 'cave, we can have a fettle.....I have loads of nuts and bolts and stuff, and an enquiring mind......!

  • 😂 definately not!

  • What’s the deal with GB steel guards having a reputation for cracking? Any points to stop this?

  • Careful installation - all fenders will break sooner or later.

  • Ah ok thanks. Reading up something about double stays would be a good idea for them. Will install carefully then.

  • If you have a particularly compact geometry a second stay on the rear may help to reduce flex (and hence noise). It was helpful on my Roadrat.
On the front, it'll be fine.

  • I think it’s important that the stays are not used to shape the guard.... I mean that there should be no force applied to keep them in shape. The stays and attachment points should be just that... not a way of holding the guard in a specific bend..... if that makes sense?
