I have found that black VO stays are available for £8.
I also noticed the Bluemels Stingray set come with coloured accents and black stays. My birthday next week so my sister has been commissioned to source a black set with red stripes which should suit my bike.

How did you manage to reduce the width of the guards for the fork? With a dremel or a file for example?

I used a cutoff wheel in a dremel to start and then a file and dremel grinding stone for 'sculpting'. Ended up for two elliptical cutouts for the fork legs. The nose of my guard is bolted to the underside of a front rack so I haven't had stiffness problems.

Round off all the cut bits, helps to prevent snags and maybe stress risers as well.

I've put off upgrading to Longboards and instead gone for the cheapskate option of "homemade flap #3" (milk carton + Gorilla tape) for the front Chromoplastic. A little wider than #2, and with added tape around the end of the stays which hopefully will limit splash-back onto feet, but we'll see.

hmmm my cube litening disc - rear i think i can use the cube attain disc mudguard (comes with some sort of integrated clamp onto the rear stays) , but the front is a no go as it requires a screw in the underside of the fork that i dont have........
would perhaps a super sticky thin pad work on the underside of the fork/topside of the guard? am i asking too much of it for winter weather?i could go crud catcher route, but they are lacking on the full wrap......unless its strong enough to put a custom flap on if it??
please, no suggestions of drilling screw hole in my carbon fork - thanks! :-)

Classic issue, road forks too narrow to fit guards. 35mm longboards don't for my time forks with 25c tyres.
so before i take em back anyone cut and modified chromoplastics to fit? Is it worth it? Or should I just get some raceblades?

Anyone had velo solo hammered metal guards snap? My missus ones have just gone at the bridge, few years old but bike has done 5-600 miles tops.
Think it's because the rear has just one stay, and even with much use of serrated washers and the supplied leather jobbies they can rattle a lot -

Not used Velo Solos but that sounds like a stress fracture. Might just be age + quality unless there was constant strain at the bolt point (or was it just a clamp?).

They use those stainless crimp jobs, used a piece of old inner tube underneath so that it didn't need to be crimped that hard + any tiny movements don't make an annoying rattle/shreeking. But still it split. Looked nice though!

I've had a GB guard go too, I think it's down to mounting and preventing the deadly combination of stress risers and fatigue cycles. Fatigue is obviously more of a problem with aluminium but it'll still do bad things to steel.

The two materials do act differently to fatigue. Alu hardens (and will eventually crack). Steel should flex enough and survive ... forever basically.

I guess it’s theoretically possible to isolate aluminium enough from bad vibes - I just think it isn’t practical.
I think plastic is the answer.

I mean mostly from a crack propagation view rather than a fatigue hardening - I think it was that that did for my GB guard. I bolted it directly at the rear brake bridge and it split directly rear of the bolt hole. When I replaced it I put in some nitrile rubber leftover from flap making, was a good shout.

I got a crack working from the edge of the guard inwards, about 40mm behind the brake bridge. Quite a strange place to get it I think. They’d done about 10,000km.
For a bike that goes on trains (bumped about in guards vans etc) I can’t be sure it hadn’t taken a knock at some point.
Hasn't hurt when I've done it. It will make the guard floppy at that point though so watch out.
