Which workstand?

  • anyone made there own? Can't be that hard, i'm on the look out for a suitable clamp then it should be easy unless i'm missing something??
Many many years ago. I made the clamp from metal sheet, which I bent to shape and then reinforced with more sheet. The stand itself I made from steel tubes cut & welded into shape. It's easy to do if you've got access to the tools.

  • Just found out, on the night I'd planned to start building my new bike, that my parents have thrown out the workstand I made for a GCSE project back in the day... Farrrk!!! Looks like I'll have to fork out for a new one :(

    So:

    or ?

    Park PCS-9 at £80
    Bike Tools stand at £60

  • Anyone?

I personally go for the above. Just looks better IMO.

If your set on the two you posted, id say the park one. I havn't used either, and i'm going on photo alone...

Or perhaps this one, purely because the base looks a little less likely to tip over...
    (£56.66)

  • I looked at the budget Boss stand, and to be honest I did'nt really like the plastic clamp.

Personaly I'd go for the PC10 if I was you. Its a very basic looking stand, as your paying for quality not features. But it looks like it'll do the job and last.

Having said that, Im saving my pennies for a Ultimate Feedback stand, to go with my new Ultimate truing stand.
Great clamping mechanism, an uber stable three leg design, and its easy to fold. Not cheap though (~£170)

One of the cheapest online sites for stands is Merlin cycles:

I picked up the park pcs-9 at cyclebasket for 68. Guess it could fold away a tad better but part from that it seems very good. good clamp and very stable. The people at cyclebasket are nice too, good service

  • Ooh, that's a hot tip-off Kboy, will spring for that I reckon, thanks.

  • I've got this one, which was £99 from On your bike at London Bridge, really stable and folds up small:

  • I have the aforementioned Bike Tools stand which I find to be excellent and very versatile. Where are you finding it at £60? Currently £104 at ChainReaction.

That Ribble one looks pretty interesting.

  • As far as i can tell, the only differences between the Park PCS 9 and the below workstand are; the park clamp can be adjusted i.e. you can set it so you don't overtighten it and damage your frames tubing (which is a great feature)
The park stand doesn't go as high (which is obviously worse).
And the Park doesn't have a collection tray.

I think the park stand is great value for money, but the below stand is better value.

the parker is plenty high though, reckon you can clamp something 1.8m above the floor or something like that

a tray would be nice though

  • The parker goes to 140cm, the above one goes to 160. I'm over 6'2" so a taller one is def better for me.

  • I received my Park PCS-9 today... it's bloody brilliant, way bigger and better than I was expecting. I thought that being the cheapest one they did it might be in some way Mickey Mouse. It's not though, it's really sturdy and very well made indeed. Simple but effective. I got it for £74 (inc. postage) from Cyclebasket. Plus being Park it has good resale value, which might be a clinching factor for some.

  • Would you say that being able to adjust how tight the clamp is, is a big bonus feature?

It's just that i think i'm going to buy the one pictured a couple of post above, but i want to make sure it's the right choice....

  • As opposed to what sorry? Aren't they all adjustable?

Also I wouldn't worry about the Park not being tall enough. I'm 6' and it's fine. It's dead high off the floor and could go much higher.

  • Yeah, that wasn't very well descibed - i was under the impression that the pcs-9's clamp could be auto adjusted. Whereby you adjust the tightness for a particualr diameter tubing, lock the clamp in place, and then it can be automatically adjusted to that tightness every time - so there's no risk of overtightening and damaging your tubing - if you don't have a clue what i'm talking about, it's probably a feature of the pcs10, and i'm just getting confused.

the clamp on the pcs9 is simply a screw in thing so you tighten it as much as needed every time, no risk for over tightening

  • I'm looking at getting a workstand and having read through this thread and others, and I'm trying to decide between these two:

    http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=VELNWORK200000000000

    http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=BOSSWORK200000000000

I have to consider my mtb with slightly oversized tubing but both of these look like they'll do the job. Does anyone know if the Boss stand folds up? Doesn't look like it does, which would mean the other stand would be more suitable...

  • says rigid so probably not

no idea bout the other, but to speak up the pcs9 again it should work fine on different size tubing since the clamp is a screw thing rather than a snap thing.

also, like someone said, since it's park it probably holds its value quite well

I have this one. Very solid. Weighs a ton. Bargain at £99.

  • Has anybody experienced the Decathlon ones? Not very expensive, I am tempted every time I go there, but then I always say to myself I'd rather wait...

Rather this one (which looks exactly the same as the Ribble one shown above)

    Than this one

    I suppose...

    Szia

    Loic

Has the added bonus of allowing you to pretend to be setting up an artillary piece when you first unfold it, if you are as childish as me.

  • I'm getting the park pcs-9 for xmas now. Just want something i can rely on, and park stuff is yet to let me down! Roll on Dec 25th!

  • just saw that wiggeliwiggle have this on half price
