If they are sending it as a gift to the UK it has to be under 36 quid or something, and even then its still up to rev.and customs to decide if they are going to tax it or not. get it send to a friend in amsterdam or to a re-mailer and then get them to post it to you from there. EU tax and customs charges are cheaper, might even be free.

I get them to put 'SAMPLE' on the value section - basically no value, you won't get taxed but if the thing is lost in transit - no value = no insurance claim.

Befriend someone who works on a US military base; they only pay domestic US shipping and guaranteed tax-free.

. . . or if you put 'BOMB' on the parcel it will be dealt with by the police and not customs and excise - the police (after the situation has been normalized) do not, as far as I am aware, charge import duty.

here's what the HK sellers do: mark the item as "REPAIRED ITEM", value - £15. works every time, on the premise that the item is originally from the UK and therefore no excise duty is incurred in returning an item to the UK, as it's already had VAT applied. :-)

I have just got a Surly Crosscheck delivered from JensonUSA and it looks like it has snuck under customs radar, hurrah! FedEx delivery tracker shows it as being delivered to my house at 9:40AM this morning, and here I was expecting £150+ in taxes.

Bad luck EM it must have been a nice expensive frame to attract that much duty and VAT.
