And can you bodge using a 10 speed shimano cassette with a 9 speed XT rear and a (probably) 8 speed bar end shifter?

Probably, I managed with an 8 speed cassette, 9 speed chain and 10 speed shifter. Chain came off a few times but it worked.

Worked heaps better when I replaced everything for the same speed stuff.

Maybe I'll just get the correct cassette and then run the right bar end in friction mode, until I get around to getting new ones.
