  • Thanks for that nelaii
I ended up going with cyclegaurd as I didn't want to get house insurance...

  • I need some help

I need to get some cover for my bike but i only want it for my trip From GB to France for a week. ( i will get contents insurance when i get back that will include it i think)

If the bike was originally worth £5k, is that what i insure it for? I know nothing about insurance...

Who is the best short term bicycle insurance company? I really dont want to pay exorbitant fees...

Sadly i need this before i go in a week.

  • No real substitute for hitting the phone I'm afraid- you have to have this sort of info direct from the horses mouth or it's no use.

You live with co-renters though? So most policies won't cover you as the people you live with aren't close family or partner. I believe that only Endsleigh will insure you (or a broker for them), and then only up to £1,500 worth of bike.

  • When I called round I found that once you go through the 4K level you enter the realm of diminishing returns fast- £1,200 a year in insurance payments that only cover 45% of the replacement cost.

Pointless- far better off putting the cash into an ISA

  • So what do you suggest Neil for my trip to france? Would suck if i crashed it there:-(

  • Holiday insurance that covers sporting equipment would be what I'd look at first

  • Listen to Dammit.

  • Look into it in the morning. Cheers boys

  • You can't insure your bike for £5k if you paid much less for it second hand

  • Can do with an agreed value policy

  • My bad.

You can't sensibly insure your bike for £5k if you paid much less for it second hand

  • That's more accurate.

  • Although M&S and Hiscocks say they will replace a bike for it's full replacement value (up to 4K), neither of them state that they want to know what you paid for it.

  • If I was going to insure mine I would either insure the parts separately (suggested by an insurance person), or take it into a bike shop and get them to state which Cannondale would be the nearest to it.

  • this is really screwy, i insured with cycleguard but they dont cover loss by airline, and easyjet dont cover losing your bike, just ski's ... any suggestions?

  • I cant find a travel insurance that will do a week to cover anything over about £600 for 1 item... I am so annoyed. Endfield or what ever its called wants a full year membership.

  • ensleigh... did you try cycleguard, you could do a month.

  • Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone knows about locking your bike up outside overnight? As I live in a top floor flat with small corridors so taking it upstairs is pretty difficult + marks the walls.

I have recently purchased a new bike and would rather it be insured, however does leaving the bike locked up overnight outside on a main road count as abandonment, or just theft from any other bike rack? I've been locking my old bike here for 6 months with no problems.

  • does leaving the bike locked up overnight outside on a main road count as abandonment, or just theft from any other bike rack?

    ^Does that make sense?

Meanwhile without reading much of the thread an answer to your question, surely ringing an insurer and asking for a quote while stating, 'I leave my bike outside locked to the railings each night' would be the best option.

  • ^ and then make sure you get them to put their reply in writing before taking out the policy.

  • But I'm going to venture a guess that they'd count that as being insufficient security.

How about either sharing the cost, or getting your own, garage?

They rent them around me for £15 per week.

  • I posted before that one of my friends had her bike stolen and the insurers have decided not to cover it because it was left locked for 12hrs which counts as abandonment. Clearly they are fuck-tards for considering that abandonment. But good to know nonetheless. I forget who it was now but it's in this thread somewhere.

  • Whatever you do **DO NOT INSURE WITH RBS HOME INSURANCE **we've had a terrible time with them. The bikes are supposed to be covered on the home insurance policy up to £450 when we called up to put our specific bikes on the policy that were worth more than £450 the chap told us they were covered under single item cover of up to £1500. When two bikes were no-more thanks to a bike theif they refused to pay out anything at all! Not even the £450 that any old bikes are supposed to be covered for.

On top of that you are treated by them like a criminal. All smiles when they are taking your premium but as soon as you want to make a claim they treat you like an insurance fraudster. Without a doubt the worst service I have ever paid for in my life.

AVOID RBS INSURANCE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

  • what was their reason for not paying out?
