Sold Secure-----Original Message-----
Dear Madam or Sir,[...]
I am looking at insuring my bicycle. A number of bicycle insurance
providers refer to your product catalogue, requiring the use of one
of the gold rated locks in your catalogue as mandatory before purchasing
insurance from them. I have two Kryptonite U/D locks which are not
listed in your catalogue, yet are very highly rated elsewhere.
They are the New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock:
and
KRYPTONITE NEW YORK M18 U-LOCK:
Could you please indicate why these locks do not appear in your catalogue?
"So read with post #170 => Kryptonite will send more locks to sold secure for their rating.

So they don't know the difference between the New York Lock and the New York Fagh lock?
Maybe send them the link for both of them, and point out the same is true for the evo and mini evo.Sigh.

I wonder if anybody can help...
Having reached middle age I have started to relive past glories and built quite a few bikes similar (or exactly the same!) to those I raced - or wish I had raced - in the seventies.
But nobody seems very interested in insuring them - too old but too valuable!
I also don't know how I would get them valued...
Has anybody had any luck with this?

Can't you up your contents insurance and stick them in with that? I had a similar problem with my vinyl, insurance wouldn't let me cover my records separately (only CDs aparently... WTF?!?) so they added them to my normal cover... I just had to audit them... Which was fucking boring... I assume that'd be much more straightforward with your bikes... Just a guess...

I have just encountered the same problem. Looked into seperate cycle insurance - waaay tooo expensive.
Described bike and added to household insurance. SAGA (Can't you tell how old I am?) offered no objections. (Included some modern bikes as well)
The cost was minimal.
Now, the bit that is unknown is their ability to pay up in the event of a claim (My 1952 CB is probably stealable).
How do I test their word / the policy reliability?
So far it only seems in the event of real loss! -

Household insurance is the easiest way I've found.
Just phone them up and ask how they would like you to value your bikes. When asked I gave my rough estimate and they were happy with that, but then again I've yet to make a claim so we'll wait and see I suppose. -

Sorry to dredge this up again, but I need some insurance.
However, I only need it for 5 weeks. Is there anyone that does? All the policies I can find are annual only.
Thanks.

If you already have some contents insurance, they can usually tack it on ad hoc for a specified period of time.

• #435
Thanks. I have student contents insurance, so I'll give them a call asap.

If you're with Endsleigh, I think they do.

Not Evans!!! They told me my bent frame was fine and sent me on my way.

Right so I need to get home contents insurance for my new flat. M&S is great value until I add a bike at over £4000, when the premium jumps £450 a year. So it would seem much better if the bike which is worth £4000 on the nose.......this could be done by having a lower value groupset and wheels (which I would then claim for if it was stolen). Would this just be a case of getting an LBS to value it lower than its current value in case it was stolen? Or is this fraudulent?

So with all these companies who demand you have a worse lock than the Fag mini that i have. How do they want you to prove to them what lock you had if the thief removes the evidence like they usually do?

If you tell them it's worth £4000 then you'll only get that amount should it get stolen, rather than the full value of the bike (over £4k). So as long as you are ok with this risk then I *think *it's ok.It might work out cheaper to insure the bike separately?

You tell them the lock was stolen along with the bike and include that in your claim? -

any help would be appreciated:
My brother had his bike stolen last week. I made this bike for his birthday last year and got all the parts either from here or from varios LBS's. I wanted to get insurance so i phoned a few places and asked them if was ok that i never had receipts (I had just moved house and stuff like that seems to just disappear) Cyclesure said this was fine, I just had to take the bike into a bike shop and have it valued and then photograph all the components. I did both and paid the fees. So i think im covered. however i just got an email today saying that the underwriters will not pay me a penny unless i can provide receipts. I phoned them and explained to them the conversation i had prior to me applying but the ladie on the over end didn't really have a answer and said she'd look into it.
Does anyone know where I stand?

Call them again and talk to a different person.
sound like the lady you've spoken to hasn't a clue.
you have a receipt for getting your bike valued, right?
-
• #444
All of their calls will be recorded- legal requirement I believe.
Tell them that you are covered due to what the lady that sold you the policy said- and that it is up to them to find the recording and check this.
They are trying it on- just an attempt to get out of paying.
Even if their policy states that you must have receipts because the lady who sold you the policy said that you did not have to in this case then those are the terms of your insurance policy with them.
If they won't play ball small claims court- and they will lose.

are there any insurers that will insure me on a frame with no serial code? (my esb) as my current insurance (evans) wont
-
• #446
swedeee, you don't have a serial number? go to 14 Bikes and ask them to add one.

Bump
I just insured my new house, buildings and contents, with M & S for £226. That's right, £226!
Cover is unlimited on both buildings and contents with cover for valuables away from home of up to £4k.
Obviously premiums will vary depending on location (this is Bexley / Dartford borders) but £226! confused.com FTW.

I went through ETA (http://www.eta.co.uk/). They seemed to have the best balance of cost and terms and conditions. You have to pay an excess unlike Cycleguard but the coverage is more thorough since Cycleguard will only replace whole bikes and not wheels, forks whatever else thieves want to steal these days. I ended up paying £105 for £925 worth of cover.

I'm also with M&S. Had one pay out (for a bike) with them that was super painless and really quite generous. Recommended.
Make sure when you speak to them, though, that you make it clear you want insurance for bikes away from home (as part of your contents insurance). When I did try to make a claim they said I wasn't covered for that. I told them I must be, as I had discussed the details of my plan when I originally called and signed up. They went back and listened to the recording (which was over a year old) and were able to confirm that I did ask for insurance the included my bicycle away from home.

So I won’t need to go through the hassle of totalling up the value of my home and contents?
No, however we do ask that you inform us of individual items, sets or collections worth £4,000 or more, which means that separate cover isn’t generally required for items like bicycles or golf clubs.
You do need to specify cover for contents away from home when arranging the insurance. Other than the 4k limit above on individual items or sets the cover for contents away from home is unlimited.
cycleguard covered my wheels even tho they weren't individually secured and only the frame was listed.
