  • Elite's app costs money (£20 annually so not too bad) and I've been enjoying the simplicity of just using a head unit or watch. If this doesn't work out I think I'll try golden cheetah, but that means going back to using a laptop on the turbo.

  • Just emailing RWGPS now about their silly "Change Start Location" addition to the Edit button.

I want an Edit button to take me straight into Edit mode, not present me with random options that I'll seldom use. "Fuck it off please." (I'm paraphrasing).

  • There's an Edge 520 on marketplace for £60 close to me, is this a smart choice if I want something simple that I can upload gpx tracks to without too much faff?

I've been using an etrex for ages, I don't need any added functionality, I'd only like to be able to upload tracks from my phone or rwgps relatively quickly. With the etrex, I gotta take out the sd card and all, much faff.

  • As long as battery not rubbish. I use a 530 for similar.

  • Replacing the battery seems kinda straightforward. Is it fair to assume that upgrades to 530/830/similar mostly concern functionality other than basic route following?

  • I dont rember what the 520/30 difference was. But I think the 520 was ok in terms of stability. My 530 has been rock solid. Worth checking reviews first.
Etrex are bombproof, so would be annoying to get a dud.

  • Is there a quicker way to update the official maps on an etrex than using their shitty Garmin Express app to copy 11GB of map files over their shitty internal SD card pipeline? 15hrs+ to update some maps in 2024 is fucking bullshit.

  • The main difference I noticed between edge 520 and 530 was startup and route loading time. My old 520 (which my partner now occassionallyl uses takes about 15mins to load (calculate) a course. It will also automatically turn off after you remove a charger, so you have to wait a minute whilst it wakes itself up just to turn it off again.
One big benefit of the 520 was (it may have changed with more recent software updates) that you didn't have the permanently on Virtual Partner who is a complete c*nt and I wish I could erase from this earth.

  • 15mins to load (calculate) a course.

How long is the route file? Don't think any of my units have ever taken that long the calculate a course.

The Virtual Cunt is still effecting their units. I've just got myself a 1040 Solar but haven't used it yet (nothing like using brand new tech on a big ride in the mountains) but I wonder if that prick still exists?

  • Normally only single day, double digit km rides. I had turned off all auto featuresso it should have been literally just loading the GPX points onto a map, but for some reason it was always deathly slow.

  • Will the L200 work with Garmin sensors ? Smashed my 820 but have everything else

  • That uses built-in storage or an SD card?

Are you using OSM or factory maps with it?

What are the route calculation settings? (on-road, popularity, etc)

  • Built in storage, route transferred from Connect app, Factory maps, all possible calculation settings turned off.

  • What the hell is the Virtual Partner?

  • A twat who Garmin invented who rides just a little bit faster than you and does a little celebration song every time they 'beat' you on a course.

  • Wonder if a factory reset could help? I would've suggested a new SD card or formatting the card but internal storage only, I've no idea if that's possible. I have restored my 800's storage before after someone provided the stock filesystem for it online.

Maybe you could try using a smaller subset of OSM maps and see if it makes any difference - that would at least eliminate the factory maps as an issue.

You've just made me want to load a route on the 1040 and see how fast it is...

  • Which is every time, because that cunt never helps fix punctures, buy food or drink, etc.

Absolute total waste of CPU cycles.

  • I can't really be bothered as my wife normally just uses her Fenix to record rides now, as I do the route finding or she sticks to familiar rides 90% of the time. The 520 is probably only switched once per year.

  • I'm a problem solver. That shit would wind me up.

  • I think so. I don't use any but I think they're all compatible, no?

It works with my heart rate monitor but that is wahoo

  • What the hell is the Virtual Partner?

Basically it is the Microsoft Clip for Garmin

  • Fucking 20hrs waiting for etrex update and it fails at the end, obvs.

  • Did wahoo fuck the elemnt things?
Had my bolt for ages, never was a problem syncing with my app, no it's fucke and says the route isn't on elemnt.
Now sat on a park bench instead of cycling with a thing that says connecting to wlan.

  • Using komoot btw.
