  • Hmm, now why does mine you look nothing like yours? What are you using to export the gpx files?

  • I think they are the same, it is just the formatting of the text changes depending on editors that are used to view them.
I do not know how to remove the inbuilt POI's from the underlying map.
I used basecamp to create the track and waypoints and exported them as a single gpx file.
I removed a lot of header information from the file to cut down the info presented.

  • Hmm, I'll importing the route to basecamp and see if anything shows up. I reeeally hope I don't have to go through and re-add all the POIs on basecamp though.

  • Adding poi's is very trivial in basecamp. Additionally you can choose the symbol to display.
    Point and click.
Make sure you make a new list so that when you export the list it includes the track plus poi's.

  • My Garmin Edge 520 has died and I'm looking at the new Edge 530. Any ops? I'm hoping it will be a big improvement, most notably because it has (correct me if I'm mistaken) decent base maps loaded out the box that saves the faff selecting under 100mb worth of map tiles on openstreetmap. Does anyone have any views on it? Obvs the Bolt is a solid choice and significantly cheaper. But for adventuring and navigation I'm thinking that the Edge has the... edge? It's been out a few months so if this has already been discussed please direct me to the thread. Ta

  • I’ve added poi and cue sheet entries on RWGPS. They show up on the turn by turn on the wahoo but not on the map. Also from what I can tell, poi only appear if they are actually on the route.

  • I’ve realised that the cue sheet is definitely the way to go, I’ve basically been compiling info in a google doc but could just as easily be adapted into cues. Thanks for the help!

  • I have recently done the same—upgrade from Garmin Edge 520 to 530. The emergency alert thing is very bad and you should disable it immediately, but otherwise I’m pretty pleased. Hardware seems cheaper—buttons feel a bit wobbly for example—but battery life, useful base maps and general speed are huge wins. Interface slightly better but still a bit pony. Device is slightly larger, no big deal. Not earth shaking, but a solid improvement.

  • Hmmmm, that's a shame that it doesn't seem as solid as the 520. I might hold out a while and wait for more reviews. Who knows, maybe the price will come down a fraction too... But overall I still think it's a better option than the Wahoo for the base maps. What's general speed?

  • I just got the 830 after my 820 did a die for the second time (first time replaced battery).

It's been good so far. The 820 used to forget my Garmin pedals constantly but this hasn't done it yet after 5 rides.

  • Hmmm, I only use HR, cadence, and speed so would hope that these would be alright with an 820 as well. I was actually thinking of going for an 820 given that it's now cheaper than the 530. But I don't really know how it stacks up. The 530 seems more of a logical progression whereas the 820 is a step into the unknown

  • By general speed I meant that by and large it seems quicker than the 520; more responsive to button presses and nippier showing maps etc. Re solidity the frame of the gadget seems solid enough, just the buttons feel a bit plasticky. Like a cheap digital watch, I suppose the plastic is just a pusher on top of the real button underneath which I hope is awesomely robust and durable.

The firmware still has annoying quirks; I can’t work out how to make it stop showing me (the same) tips about saving battery life etc.

  • There was no emergency alert thing activated by default on my 530. Whenever I connect my phone there's a message saying 'Incident response disabled' or something along those lines.

  • Oh right, haha. That's all good to know. Thanks!

  • Is the Edge 830 likely to get any cheaper anytime soon? I need some navigation for an upcoming trip, but can't decide whether to spend now, or find a way of attaching a phone to my bars.

  • Why do you go 830 not 530?

I'm considering a new computer but can't really see why the 8 is much better than the 5

  • The POI search and the touchscreen really, but I'm not sure if I can justify the extra £80.

  • 3rd party Garmin mount + backplate glued on to phone case: is it going to explode first time I hit a root? Nothing gnarly, mainly just gravel riding/ fairly tame bikepacking.

Reason for that combo is silly 22.2 diameter bullmoose bars on 2 bikes.

  • It depends on the glue used, materials of the mount and phone case, surface preparation, bonded area.... So, maybe?

I have a small USB light which I epoxied a Garmin mount to, and added two little grub screws, mainly to help the epoxy with rotation forces when mounting / dismounting.

Would it be possible for you to add screws from the inside of the phone cover?

  • Ah yeah, good shout, I have some small grub screws already.

  • Anyone looking to get rid of their Wahoo, let me know please!

  • The Live Segments page and notifications have disappeared from my ELEMNT Bolt. Think after Wahoo asked me to re-authorise Strava. Done all the restart / authorise stuff. Any ideas?

  • Fixed with several log-in-log-out-authorise-deauthorise cycles.

  • Any recommendations for a GPS solely for navigation, decent battery life would be a massive bonus.

  • Etrex and it takes aa batteries

    Cluncky but super functional.

There are the touch versions or the non touch. Have a look at both.
