  • It worked. I just threw in 5 or 6 properties to look at from google maps and cycled around to them one after the other. The Garmin tells you how far each waypoint is from your current location so you just scroll down the list finding the next closest place. Worked a treat!

  • are you using a 605?

  • Nope, mine's a trekking GPS more for hiking and stuff than cycling or driving. It's a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx.

I'm trying to work out how to get the free OSM maps working with it.

  • does it take additional memory cards? if it does, then this should help.

    edit: and this

  • I've had that page open for weeks now.. just not had a chance to read it. I went to http://www.mapsntrails.com/en/tips-tools and installed their Europe maps. Also requested some London Road maps off some other site mentioned on that OSM link. It installed ok but I've not yet read enough to know how to use it. I could download copied Garmin maps and use a keygen.. I wish they'd just include good ones free.

Ok, so there's sendmap but I thought Img2GPS that I used did the same thing? Need to read some more..

  • would you use the garmin maps or just prefer the OSmaps?

are you planning on making your own routes or just programming the gps to go towards a direction?

if you're planning on making your own routes, VeeVee, myself, and some others off the forum have been figuring out how to get that to work with success.

  • I'll use either but I'm not paying. :)

The idea was to use it to just ride somewhere and then hit "take me home" to get back. But that never happens so maybe I'll start mapping routes out. Some audax would sort that out but I'm not exactly motivated to ride at the mo'. Maybe a nice bushwalk in Oz instead.

  • DIY iphone GPS freecycle.. love it!

my garmin's got the 'take me home' function, although it's still a bit temperamental -- it wants to take me through council estates and back roads. you? not motivated to ride? what's the dealio?

  • I'm being a lazy fecker. Coming back from France, riding anywhere near London is now.. meh.
I love my little commutes but big stuff on weekends I just can't be bothered. I'm looking for a house so my attention has moved away from the bike for a bit. I've got lots of bike stuff to build/fix and once the house hunting chore dies off it'll come back. I was thinking maybe a bit of solo riding somewhere new with the use of the GPS would make things a bit interesting, hence the thread bump after I heard greenbank mention these free maps. Reading that article about training the GPS I now know how to route (Aussies chuckle here). All I need is a destination and not to get hammered on Friday/Saturday and ride... Bath perhaps?

  • do you think a bath will help not getting hammered on friday/saturday? i'll have to try that.

  • not sure if you've come across these, but they're two useful sites to map routes

I knew someone would make that joke.
And people think places in Ozstraya have silly names! :)

  • not as bad as Austria

  • I keep reading about that place and people taking photos of themselves rooting under the signs or stealing the signs etc. They voted not to change the name of the town.

Lot of water in that map. Were you heading for it?
I have a cough copy of OS memory map, with a full set of maps, not sure if it will work with your Garmin, but you're welcome to give it a try

    from wikipedia:
"We had a vote last year on whether to rename the town, but decided to keep it as it is. After all, Fucking has existed for 800 years, probably when a Mr Fuck or the Fuck family moved into the area. The 'ing' was added as a word for settlement."

  • Yeah.. I think I read it in the Metro the other day. Do they get all their "news" from wikipedia I wonder? :)

  • probably. and most pub quizzes are taken from the Metro's informative pages.

    edit: what was my point?

  • Done the searching, got a few very techy answers that involved code and stuff!

Does anyone know of a way of importing a gmap into a GPS? In this case it's a Garmin Dakota 20.

Alternately, can a gmap be transferred to google maps? (I'm aware gmaps is a 'mash' that uses google) Then I think I'd be able to send it directly.

    Cheers,

    Bob.

  • If you can export it in GPX you can then re-import it into other mapping tools/software and devices.

For some reason my hand-held GPS(HTC Magic/mymaps editor) wouldn't accept bikenet or gmaps GPX exports. I had to create a Google maps account, import to there and then to my device.
A bit of faffing but got there in the end.

  • Cheers,

I'll search out a GPX export tool and give that a go.

  • Any Gmap page should have a button that says 'export to GPX' - this IS your GPS route.

  • Yep, tried this but get the following:

    GMapToGPX v6.4b (ERROR)

There doesn't seem to be any extractable data on this page.
If there is, but it's not detected, please visit the project homepage and leave a bug report, including a link to the page you're on right now.
Note: Google Maps mashups (that is, a page with a Google Map on it, but not at google.com) do not automatically work with this utility. If you would like to see GMapToGPX work with your Google Maps mashup site, please leave a comment on the project page.

There's also a post or two on the net of peeps having the same problem, no follow up.

I'll probably just input a duplicate into google and try exporting that....

    Cheers for the help!

**Just tried it again and it worked! Nice one.

  • you can try also with www.openstreetmap.org
