Basically yes.
Next to that. It's not cycling culture. It's a group of mates having a good time on a friday night. That this incidently involves bikes has nothing to do with it.

So, it's a private matter amongst friends then and bikes are peripheral ?

Our ' community' is strong enough. Look at the growth of this forum over the last (not even) year. We don't need any output to make this bigger.
DO I have to remind you that riding a bike without 2 working brakes is illegal ??
If I had a say there would be no articles / pictures / videos / wacky little reports about any of the following:
Pisumo
alleycats
trackstand
championships
Bikepoloetc
etc
etc
But ask me again tomorrow and I might have a diffirent opinion. Such is life....

Next thing you know we'll have an article in the Times or Telegraph denouncing "irresponsible urban cyclists", "criminal hedonists without brakes", etc... and there will have been no friendly warning on the intrawebs or timid requests to cover the event. But in the end alleycats can always stay away from the mainstream, in Tokyo for example they are not advertised online anymore after a police crackdown.
There are two reasons.
I'm stroking my goatee in perplexity..
two reasons? For what? And what are the two reasons?... -

Yes. You can have 60 people show up and maybe 15 racing. Next to that, the socializing takes up most of the time. It's a way to catch up with old and new faces.

Understood, so the reason this guy should not enquire about alley cat races is because of their legality ?

I'm directly responsible for articles about at least one of the above... but I don't think the report on Pisumo I did will have much of an influence on the world.
By the way we should do more Pisumo.

Cool !
Alley cats have nothing to do with bikes, Glastonbury also has nothing to do with music and the pub has nothing to do with getting pissed up on medium quality larger.
I am beginning to understand your hostility towards this prick who thought he could write up a piece on your social life.

le car By the way we should do more Pisumo.
I think - suits - might be the way to go ! Might make riding a little more chancy.
But. . . when you come off - you get to keep the skin on your elbows ! :)

lpg tynan, just come to bed.
Regardless of your homosexual fantasies of what situation you might wish to imagine me in, I must work to my own schedule. :)

hmm and out of all the choice there is you want to take it to MAXIM ?
Don't do it, send them a piece on Paris Hilton instead. -
• #314
Ok, then. What would be the advantage of him showing up?
-
• #315
Will Paris Hilton show up?
-
• #316
For £20,000, yes.
-
• #317
Jos Ok, then. What would be the advantage of him showing up?
What is the advantage to who ?
-
• #318
To us in general. Why would the people involved want him to turn up. What's he gonna bring for us.
-
• #319
@Jos....we will be going to bed no later than 10.30 for the whole month of Feb.
The two reasons Caspar is talking about are the two statements he has quoted.
-
• #320
So the argument is now 'What's he gonna bring for us' ?
I don't know, sandwiches perhaps ?
There really is no need for anymore reasons, god knows you have been through a few, I was quite happy with the idea that it's a group of mates having a good time on a friday night and that bikes have nothing to do with an alley cat.
That's good enough for me ! :)

Ah I see, I misread his post as saying 'There are two reasons' (as in 'I know of two reasons') - rather than the 'here' are two reasons kind of meaning !
Whoops! My mistake :D, apologies to Caspar and scrub the goteé bearded enigmatist analogy !

so what time does the alleycat start at the dragon bar on fri night??

I'm not a courier and I've raced exactly three alleycats so I don't claim to be an expert, but this is my point of view.
They're a lot of fun, an underground thing, organised by people for no better reason than to enjoy themselves with the people they know, or share a common interest with. They're not put on to 'promote' anything, which is why, in my opinion, the idea of mainstream media 'exposing' or reporting on alleycats is a bad thing. Jos asked 'what's he gonna bring for us?' - I don't think he meant in a physical sense, more what will this story bring that is positive for alleycats in general - and the answer is nothing. At all.
I don't claim to speak on behalf of anyone, but these races have been going for more than a decade without too much hassle, and the growing popularity of fixed gear bikes is going endanger that. It's inevitable that things will change, it's a part of life, but there's no need to rush towards it.
See you all at the Dragon Bar; Midnight, wasn't it?

True.
Next to that. Google any random 15 year old article on line about an alleycat, Change town, date and names and you' have your very own article. They have been writing the same shit for the past 15 years. That's the reality.
And there is no bike porn among messengers. They work 5 days a week and are to busy to make sure their handlebar tape is matching the tyres they have on.

I can. A least keep them away.
You will stop certain parts of cycling culture falling into the wrong (by your own definition) hands ?
