  • And so lucas makes an understated return.

More flounces than a flounce thread.

  • Going to watch that Melancholia film.

    Oh Kirsten.
    It's all about the ending.enjoy.

  • Is that the Rambo set in Burma with the peace keepers that get blown up and melty face fucks shit up? If so I'm with bodieanddoyle

Did you catch her in 'How to lose friends and alienate people' last night?

    It is. And thank you.

  • The main thing that annoyed me about Rambo was them making the bad guy gay, like that somehow made him even worse.

    Maybe I'm being too sensitive

  • I think Stallone was trying to demonstrate that gay people can be cruel too.

    [Can't tell if serious meme]

  • Being serious...

  • Just got in from watching Once Upon A Time in Anatolia.

Opinion was very much divided in the group I went with. A mate fell asleep, but I've never known him to stay awake through any film I've watched with him. His sister did too, and was glad it was over. My girlfriend liked it but thought it could have been shorter. I thought it was absolutely perfect.

The action takes place over a single night and the next morning, so when the film's starting to drag a bit and you're wondering how long is left, you know the characters who've been up all night are going through exactly the same. The film captures that sort of strange fraternity that you experience with the people you stay up all night with, and the atmosphere is fantastic. The characters are instantly believable and really well acted, and you can instantly read between the lines and capture a lot of meaning that goes unspoken.

Every shot is beautiful as well. Almost all are from a fixed position catching action unfolding in front it, with a lot of nice rolling landscapes.

My girlfriend, who's big on philosophy and that caught a lot of references to theology, mortality, and a lot of symbolism that I didn't pick up on; I thought it was incredibly realistic and naturalistic, but that political points on justice, modernity and rural/urban divides came out as well.

If you've got a bit of patience, it's a wonderful piece of art, and highly highly recommended.

  • It's her teeth what does it for me

Watched the Woman in Black last night. Actually pretty damned good, pretty scary in an old school manner and a fair few shocks. My wife couldn't watch it apart from hiding behind the sofa. In fact she spent so much time hiding that she looked at me blankly when I commented about Harry Potter. She didn't even realise that Daniel Radcliffe was in it. Ha!

  • Watching Senna. Sky Atlantic if anyone's interested

  • Anyway My review of Expendibles is probably a 1000 posts back. I can't wait until number 2 comes out.

Did you feel intellectually superior about yourself after posting that?

    really?
I love action films with little story line. Death Race being a favorite. But even I found the Expendables terrible.

  • Fucking loved it. Brilliant film

  • really?

    Original Stallone or new Statham?

  • But even I found the Expendables terrible.

I find it terrible too after watching the A-Team.

  • Both of those are diabilical waste of film.

  • Both of those are diabilical waste of film.

    Totally agreed, Absolute dog shit

  • I enjoyed it actually. I did not enjoy wearing 3D glasses over my normal glasses though! Might as well sit through it again whilst I plough through emails.

  • Watched The Woman.

Some dude finds a feral woman in the woods near his house, captures her, and locks her in the basement.
Dudes family are roped in to help 'train' her.
Wife and teenage daughter are terrified of dad, teenage son is a psychopath in the making.
    Shit goes down.

pretty good to start with, overly long 2nd act, final act makes you say 'fucking hell' a lot.

    Soundtrack was awesome too.

First Australian film i have enjoyed since Romper Stomper.

  • Avatar. On TV now.

This is not a good film at all.

    It's pretty.

    But it's not good.
    And it's so frigging loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong.

  • Watched The Woman.
    .

i watched it the other week, thought it was pretty good too

  • Watched Colin Firth and Julianne Moore in A Single Man last night. Beautiful direction by Tom Ford. Particularly liked the dulling or enhancing of colours depending on Firth's mood (which works better than it sounds). Some lovely camerawork, especially the recurring eye close-ups.

  • What dictates how much a film can be advertised on the BBC? For the last couple of weeks "The Hunger Games" has been plugged again and again. The distributors must know a way in, and I'm intrigued to know what it is.
