On the Waterfront and The Wild One.
Avoid Superman and if you only want to see the side of his big, bald head then watch Apocalypse Now.
In other news, I watched My Week with Marilyn last night. Michelle Williams gave a tremendous performance of a woman who by that time was so spangled on uppers, downers and every which wayers it was amazing that she was able to be upright at all. She portrays Marilyn as the seriously fragile woman that she really was - always looking for some sort of approval from whomever was present. Having never really rated her as an actress, I will watch The Prince and the Showgirl again with a different view.
Kenneth Brannigan was his usual "Cambridge Footlights" self giving a solid performance as Olivier - even with his dubious accent.
Emma Watson was shocking. Her wig looked like it had been kicked around the dressing room floor and was less convincing than one of Terry Wogan's. The you fella who played Colin Clark (whose week it was) gave an excellent performance as the impressionable chap who hopelessly falls for Norma Jean Baker.
All in all, I think that Michelle Williams is an actress who has the potential for some monumental performances in the future.
Nice write up - will deffo be seeing that one. Importantly though, is it DJ friendly? -

He was at school with Kenneth Branagh, was he not?
I reckon so.

Hugo - very disappointed. Can't imagine many kids being enthralled with it, the ones in the cinema seemed restless, I know I was. Nice to look at but so dull....

DJ and I saw this on the Kings Road today - funny as some of the scenes are shot in Chelsea I do believe and reference Royal Court Theatre. James laughed outloud once which means it surely is a winner. I wasn't sure about Michelle Williams in the first scene but quickly found her convincing. She's a very endearing actress who really captured Marilyn's vulnerability and she has some lovely curves (she does always play such sad/troubled characters though). An enjoyable film.[Vacuous comment: What was going on with Emma Watson's awful jagged fringe?!]

I was expecting something much more magical, especially with the automaton! Lovely story but definitely too drawn out.

Got hooked on The Fly again. Apart from being a horror flick it's a superlative, shattering tragedy. An exhausting watch, but a very fine film. From listening to Cronenberg's commentary I learned that Goldblum and Davis were an actual long-term couple at the time of shooting. Excellent extras too on the Blu-Ray, including a 'Making Of' which is longer than the film itself.

Count me in for any Woll Smoth vehicle, even more so when it includes Brolin.
Some proper popcorn films coming out soon - can't wait for Brad Bird's take on Mission Impossible.
Also looking forward to the remake of Dragon Tattoo, despite not having seen the original or read the books.
It just looks like proper Fincher.

Incidentally, the moment at 1'06" on the above trailer is probably my moment of 2011.

Last night I was given the option of watching Christian Bale in Reign of Terror, or Bruce Willis in The Jackal.
I opted for The Jackal and it was going well until Richard Gere appeared on screen with his abberation of an accent. We swiftly switched over to watch Batman take on Mathew McConaugheeyheyhgy and some dragons.
It was fucking shit.
To top it all off, I couldn't get this situation out of my head - and ultimately I think it would have made a much better film:

looks like superted getting blanked

I watched princess Mononoke last night, the only Studio Ghibli film I hadn't seen, it didn't disappoint.

by Mathew McConaughaheyhehegy of Reign of Fire fame.
Here's the plot I had in mind.
[Insert plot of Reign of Fire but replace any pointless tension shown between Christian Bale and Mathew McConaughaheyhehegy with pointless tension shown between superted and Mathew McConaughaheyhehegy. Effectively sidelining Batman and letting us have an on screen grudge match between mr moustache and mr McConaughaheyhehegy]
If any exec producers see this, I can have a script with you in 36 hours. I'm also very cheap.
Just watched 'The help', I really enjoyed the story.
Reminded me of this:
