  • Been listening to The Thing soundtrack all week. Haven’t watched it in a long while and have been reminiscing about seeing it in hi-def at a lovely BFI screen with about 5 other people in the audience and the (much better) sell-out screening at PCC where the original ‘rated X’ 35mm print was shown.

Planning to stay up late this weekend, see what happens…

  • It's one of those films I will happily tell people is a masterpiece, then rewatch it and realise I under sold it.

  • An absolute fucking banger. Is it the best Carpenter film?

  • Halloween for me.

  • Settling down to a romantic movie night.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Netflix sequel/ reboot)

  • Escape from New York here. 12 year old me can't get over it!

  • The Thing is on the freeview horror channel tomorrow at 9pm if anyone’s interested

  • I couldn’t wait til the weekend…

The lighting and composition is so incredible.

Reminded how similar Hateful Eight is to this. Felt like a remake of sorts.

  • That is a banger to be fair. I wish all cars came with chandeliers.

  • Assault on Precinct 13 is another John Carpenter banger, but often gets "overlooked" in favour of his more popular flicks.

    Just don't watch the remake.

  • The theme tune to this is one of his best, too

  • Course The Thing was already a remake and Assault a kind of reboot 👨‍💻

  • Pig was unexpected and very enjoyable

  • Went to see at cinema a few weeks ago. Agree that there’s a lot of male nudity but man, I was in stitches the entire time, as was the rest of the audience. As a big Jackass fan who wasn’t old enough to see any of the other films at the cinema, the atmosphere really lived up to expectations.

  • Ugh. Power of the Dog. 2 hours of pedestrian cowboy Oscar bait.

I tried to watch this last night (without having read these comments). 40mins was enough for me, thank you.

  • ...and now I've just watched The Thing for the first time. Cracker

  • "in the mouth of madness" and "prince of darkness" two later carpenters worth checking out - not quite up to the standard of assault/thing/escape but still decent

  • Prince of darkness, the thing, mountains of madness - aka the apocalypse trilogy - is a great triple bill, if you have the stamina.

Halloween is still my favourite Carpenter, but it’s so close run with The Thing that it’s like choosing which of my kids I love the most.

I think Halloween edges it because it did that thing where an artist creates a genre and perfects it at the same time. Halloween spawned so many slasher imitations, but none of them - even the genuinely good ones - lay a sharp pointy knife on the original.

  • carpenter is sickeningly talented really - his soundtracks (particularly assault / halloween / halloween III) are among some of the best

  • Love Prince of Darkness! Surprisingly creepy in places. Plus source of those ace samples on DJ Shadow's Changeling/Transmission 1

  • I recently discovered that I have Entroducing on vinyl. Someone must have given it to me or I absent mindedly bought it not knowing what it was as it’s not the sort of stuff I get. Just giving it a spin now!

  • It's in my top ten for sure! Love it
