  • Watched Supernova last night. Made me quite emotional which is rare for a movie. A really good watch if you're into cutting onions. Not a Hollywood spoiled movie despite the cast of Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci.
With a soundtrack by Keaton Henson to set the tone.

  • We watched Lagaan
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagaan

    Amazing Bolliwood classic.
Indian villagers in Victorian times are challenged by arrogant colonialists Brits to beat them at cricket to get out of paying taxes.

    Sort of superhero film.
Bunch of misfits brought together, each with a skill linked to cricket skills and go to battle.

    With music and dancing
    So much fun

  • Not sure how I feel about Nightmare Alley.
It was good, and looked great, but I think I was expecting it to be better, and a bit more weird.🤔

  • The House on Netflix. Love a good animation. More dark than comedy, good though.

  • Any got any good Korean thriller/horror recommendations? Recently watched The Wailing (amazing film) and I saw the Devil. Ideally not shit your pants type scary but more unsettling I guess.

  • I find shitting my pants unsettling.

  • Train to Busan is a good Korean zombie thing.
The Old Boy/Vengeance Trilogy is worth a watch as well, very unpleasant though.
Also Parasite if you've not seen that, more thriller than horror but fairly unsettling!

  • Suffering from a heavy cold, so spent the day watching:

Hatchet for the Honeymoon - great stuff. Gothic giallo is always good value, even though this isn't strictly giallo, as theres no mystery in it.

Designated Victim - see, what improves Strangers on a Train is setting it in Milan and Venice and ramping up the atmosphere. Always worth the time.

Stray Cat Rock: Wild Jumbo - only one of the series I'd not seen, and instead of Tokyo streets, they all spend their time at the beach? Built up for a good heist finale though

Followed that with Groupie - lot more downbeat and better than its rep suggests. Not quite as good as Permissive, but near.

Not sure what to watch tonight. Maybe some Amicus.

  • You probably know to do this already but it's worth keeping on top of your lateral flows. I tested positive for covid yesterday after a couple of days feeling coldy but testing negative. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Old Boy is one of those films I've just never got round to seeing so that's a good shout. Train to Busan looks good too, cheers.

    Yeah, liked Parasite.

  • Mother by Bong Joon Ho is good too. More of a crime thriller type thing.

  • Yep, been doing that. All negative. Had Covid early Dec and this one is just the boy bringing home some uber cold from the nursery and taking the household down.

  • Yeah looks good too, thanks,

  • Hope it clears up soon!

  • The Night House, invisible man vibes with a few good scares. Prefer Moss to Hall but still decent enough.

Quiz show, passed me by first time round but glad i caught up with it. Total man fest but still good once it got going.

  • psychological thriller OK ? BURNING (2018) is the best film I've seen in recent years and I still think about it regularly... very muted headfuck, w/similar themes to parasite tho in a less caricatured manner

  • Am I right in thinking this is based on a Haruki Murakami short story? Added to my watchlist, sounds good either way!

  • The film is based on the short story "Barn Burning" from The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami, with elements inspired by William Faulkner's story of the same name.... It received almost universal critical acclaim, particularly for its sense of unease, ambiguous narrative, and performances.

  • BURNING (2018)

    One of my favourite films.

Steve Yuen was great in Minari and The Humans also if you haven't had a chance to watch.

  • Quite different from the story IIRC. Murakami is much less ambiguous, though never actually explicit. Weird actually, the more I think about it. In the story there’s talk of burning barns, which turns out to be a metaphor. In the film they're actually burnt. I should watch Burning again. Compare and contrast.

  • Thanks, I thought the plot sounded familiar! I might give that a watch today.

  • Power of the dog. A slow burner for sure and there were a few things I missed. Have been thinking about it since finishing it last night and slowly unravelling it in my head.

  • The Last Duel: actually not bad. I guess Ridley still has a ton of muscle memory when it comes to making a half decent film. Matt Damon’s mullet is worthy of a watch all by itself.

  • Enjoyed Train to Busan a lot, cheers!
