Rocks on Netflix was excellent. Tough in places but didn't leave me broken like Nobody knows.

And following the Sunday afternoon musical vibe from last week The Forty-Year-Old-Version was super good. Rahda Blank was phenomenal.

Any more music focused gems i should look out for? I generally dislike musicals but i'm starting to enjoy live music in film a lot more. Sound of Metal is on the list and already watched/liked whiplash (it's a boxing movie...).

We watched this a bit ago after I skim read Mark Kermode's review; "empowering, uplifting, East London, crowd-pleasing" etc.

Should probably have given the review a bit more attention though, it's a bleak/depressing watch in places and properly spooked my wife out as we played spot the local neighbourhood, having earlier spoken about where we want our child to go to school/grow up...

finally got round to watching Parasite.
I liked it, MrsDeth was unsure.

It did spark an evening discussing it, which doesn't often happen, so that was good.
Glad it was as successful as it was, so there should not be a US remake (which would ruin it)

Ah that's a shame. My partner and i actually thought the school scenes showed a well constructed balance of different backgrounds and avoided (to use a 40 year old version quote) "poverty porn". For me the grimness was centred around one families very dire circumstances but wasn't a reflection on the general situation.

Some recent watches:

Peninsula, follow up to Train to Busan. If you like zombie films, these are a must. Obviously better watched in Korean with subtitles.

The Painter and the Thief (available for £3 on YouTube): This was excellent, a documentary about an artist who befriends the guy who steals two of her paintings. This is the best thing I've watched in months and I've watched a lot.

If you're into well acted, serious, slow moving, difficult, cerebral, dark but ultimately uplifting dramas with believable, sad story lines, I highly recommend the miniseries entitled "This Much I Know is True".

I posted it earlier, but no one said anything so I'm trying once more. it's worth your time.

I watched it over the course of 4 months here and there because my wife isn't into that kind of stuff.

I hadn't heard of Peninsula! I enjoyed Train to Busan when I watched it a couple of years ago. Thanks for that. The Painter and the Thief sounds interesting too.

finally got round to watching Parasite.

Should try the black and white version it makes the 2nd half spectacular.

The Mist is another film elevated by the black and white version.

Anyone got suggestions for decent light hearted stuff? Ideally available on Amazon prime or Netflix. I need to populate my Letterboxd with stuff that isn't extremely miserable or hard going. Looking for comedies, stupid action films, so bad they're good films or whatever really!

I think the John Wick's are great. They know exactly what kind of films they are.

Don't you have follow along with those? I just want to sit and get fat.

@ltc - Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse if you haven't already seen it. Literally 10/10 perfect action film.

Yes to Equalizer 2 (and 1), both ad free on All4 and both nothing new, just really well done and the minutes fly by

Watched Magnolia at the weekend and very much enjoyed it's ridiculous plot, and ending.

Also watched LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring yesterday. Man, that film has aged well considering it was made during a somewhat awkward phase for SFX. Really, really, really enjoyed it. Cannot wait to watch The Two Towers tonight, which was my favourite IIRC. I think I may have only seen it once since I was a kid. Love Treebeard so much.

Love Hunt For The Wilderpeople! I saw Jo Jo Rabbit in the cinema and really wasn't fussed about it for some reason. The first Waititi film I've seen that I've not particularly enjoyed.

Into The Spider-Verse is going on the list, as are The Equalizer films. I think I've seen the rest but thanks all for the suggestions, keep 'em coming!

Jo Jo Rabbit might the the worst film made since whatever Guillermo del Toro last released.

Make Up is quite good. A drama that feels like a thriller. Reminds me a bit of Red Road which is an awesome film.

Freaky's not bad. Vince Vaughn body swapping with a teenage girl turns out to be quite hilarious.

I really enjoyed Jo Jo Rabbit.
