Merkin sniper was pretty fucking good, even with all the anti war bias I took into it. There was a good portrayal of how hard that kind of shit is and how it can affect someone. It's a very one sided account of a war but it's not really about the war, just one guys experience of it, so it's probably right in that respect. I expected shooty action and got more, then realised Eastwood directed it (somehow missed this before watching) at the end and realised he makes some really moving movies, almost makes you proud to be an American.

Is he not a fully paid up NRA spokesman?

Wouldn't surprise me, it's quite pro America, it's still good and draws you into the characters well. I rewatched Gran Torino recently and that does the same thing, you end up routing for a miserable old racist in that and you end up quite enamored with a guy in this who personally kills a fuck tonne of people. A lot of the 'bad guys' are quite one dimensional but it's a film from the main character's point of view, not an overview of the war and it's pros and cons.

I was disappointed. Bradley Cooper and S.Miller's characters did ring true. Eastwood does tend to get good performances out of his cast.
Pretty much everything else was lazy; clean, perfect-americans vs cardboard bad guys. It was just way too simplistic - a western.
There is also a scene showing a happy home which I found a bit (unintentionally) sinister. He sneaks up on his wife in the kitchen with a revolver, telling her to "drop your drawers" they laugh/kiss... aaahhh. Who doesn't adore casual rape threats at gunpoint? :-/
Generation Kill showed the shooter's predicament, and Korengal shows more about the lives of the US soldiers.

... a miserable old racist ...
SPOILERS
Yeah, but he's a miserable old racist with a heart of gold who overcomes his miserable racism to do something heroic for the slopes. That's why I rooted for him.
Although whether he would have done the same thing had he not been dying, I dunno.

Northern Soul is very enjoyable, a mild 100 minutes that shouldn't get missed.
Café de Flore is when the game.. became more serious, I would say "un pezzo da 90".

Watched It's Such A Beautiful Day on Netflix last night.
Amazing.
A review I read of it described it as South Park meets 2001 which is pretty close to how it felt. Really powerful film.
