Thats a bit far. I was just thinking, Amsterdam ain't so very far away...
I predict it would take about 16hrs non stop London>Amsterdam including boat to calais or whatever. Whaddya reck? -
• #79
Well now I can say furthest fixed is 40+ miles London 2 Southend. Haven't done any long distance since last summer (getting my fix), and was lagging a bit towards the end. But then I thought I'd be alright just being on flats and not fitting my clipless pedals. Muppet.

But theres a cycle path all the way to dover, you can't get lost...
even so, there is a ferry from essex 2 holland, may be quicker....
-

I used the roads and cycle paths and I got lost on both. :)
I actually got pulled over by the cops while riding down the M2..
Does the Essex to Holland ferry still run? I thought the only ferries still operating were the Dover-Calais ones? -
• #83
Yeah, i just checked. London to Harwich (60 odd miles), boat to hook of holland, then its about 40 miles to holland. perfect.
-
• #84
that's what i did too. there are 2 fast ferries, one at 10am and one some time late in the afternoon, plus one overnight wich i have no idea about, but there is one. the fast one costs about £30-45, depending on when u book it. it takes about 5 hours to hook von holland.
get a cycle map for holland, otherwise u will get lost. guaranteed.. -

Guess I went the long way :)
That's pretty cool. Long way for a space-cake but could be a fun weekend for the cycling-inclined! -

Bumping this thread because I was fool enough to ride fixed from London to Bristol on Friday. Chose a 120 mile (200 km?) route via Slough, Maidenhead, Henley, Didcot, and Chipping Sodbury.
I still haven't been converted from platform to clipless or clipped, but my main problems were fitness and hills. I thought it would be pretty flat after Didcot, but my chosen route skirted the Ridgeway hills. Once you've done a few hills that take you way over your aerobic threshold, it's game over.
On the the other hand, I did it, and I can feel somewhat smug.

Hope you didn't have to contend with bank holiday traffic and rain as well as crap pedals :O
Riding back to London then?
-

Some rain: not the soaking I worried about. Got out of London before traffic built up.
Couldn't face doing it in reverse, although the A4 might be more do-able, so I got the train. What a wuss.

Best give up now, and buy a car.

80/90 miles to Rye, and 60-odd miles to Brighton without a brake.

80/90 miles to Rye

furthest ive ridden in a day was 120~miles in south wales last summer.
scince then ive been doing mid kent to brighton reguarly which is about 90miles. the last 10 miles or so entering brighton is downhill, and im normally pretty sore by then so have been known to change over to the freewheel.i geared down a little while ago, and at first i missed the top end speed, but then i developed a better spin. now i can hold a better average speed with faster climbing, and my faster spin keeps me roughly at the same speed as the old gearing on the flat. its also alot nicer, as its now my lungs and heart which suffer, rather than my poor old legs. its much easier to control your breathing than it is to ignore achey knees and cramp.

Did this today, Fixed. Only 36 miles but up some rather nice hills. -

I'm planning on riding to brighton from uxbridge, fixed (67miles ish) in a few weeks. Closest I have done is about 30, its gonna hurt.

I'd like to be able to make 300k in one day.. :S
Ha! From May 2007 ^^. That's funny. I rode 300k in a day, fixed, on the Soma on last year's Dunwich Dynamo. Piece of piss! :)

I've done a few spin classes. They can be a novel change from riding outside.
All the 'real' cyclists will laugh (roadies, I'm talking 'bout you) but that's because they are afraid to stray outside their little realm of hardcore.
There's plenty of totty viewage at spin class too. Mmm Mmm. :)My SS MTB was 32:15 for the road (now THAT makes you spin!) and 32:17 for dirt 'n' hills.
I run similar on my mountain bike 36:16. To keep up with any one I have to spin as fast as I can for about 30seconds to a minute, let me rest and then do it all again once the bike slows down.

Only managed about 40 mile fixed in a day. Will probably do the DD on fixed though as my first proper long distance journey. After that I might start thinking of doing a flat 300k or something.
i just slept aside the road. done 210km on day 6, otherwise 160km on each day.
oh, and i had 30kilos worth of luggage..
