  • TheBrick Don't leave it out side overnight reguarly it will be nicked. If the halls are really that arsey get your self a bike bag (one with out padding is cheap £30) and put it in there. Or just "Hide it" under a sheet in your room. As long as you are descreate, cearful about chipping paint on door ways leaving mud / oil everywhere e.t.c you should be o.k. If you are nice to your cleaners and keep your room ok other wise they will be cool. Bring your bike up after a week or two after you have sused out the situation. Only lock a real beater outside overnight reguarly that you don't mind being stolen.

The krypto chain can be broken in a 1 min or so check out the vid.

That's a good idea - I didn't think of a bag! I really want to ride whilst at uni - I think i'd go crazy without it :-|

  • would this fit around the back wheel/frame?

  • Doesn't look like it would fit around anything. Isn't that designed to go through the disk of a brake on a motorcycle? If so, it's too small to be of use on a bike unless you want to put it through your crank/chainring and hope that no-one simply picks your bike up.

  • Anyone who wants a cheap and relatively secure mini d-lock can check out discount bicycles, which has the onguard mini bulldog for "20 or so, and then ride to their industrial unit in Brixton and buy it without the P&P. The lock is ok rather than amazing (soldsecure silver) but is a handy size and a good back up lock.

I use the Abus Granit steel-o-flex cable which is good for getting round oversized lamposts etc. and a pitlock skewer on my front wheel.

  • You can get those mini pitbulls for £14.99 (inc. postage) from here

  • i got paid $10 for my mini ongaurd lock... its a long story, but basicly it envolves buying it on sale, breaking it, and returning it for normal priced replace ment, and the clerk gave me $10 cash!

  • Ive got one of the krypto leave and forget locks. Which i leave and forget outside work over night till i need it in the morning. The damn thing has started to seize up inside with rust now though. Im going to bung some light oil down there tonight but i have to yank it to get it off which leads to some interesting looks.

  • Who was looking for a fahgetaboutit d-lock? Its here:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18394

If i hadnt just blown the cash on a cheap new bike i would get one :(

  • i was, but bought the new york 3000 'cause no lbs had it and i needed a lock there and then.

sucks that the fahgettaboudit is the same price that I paid for the 3000, even thought he fahgettaboudit is allegedly better. :-/

  • Hi all, this is my first post on this great site!

Does anyone use Sheldon Brown's lock strategy?

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html

I've asked this in another forum recently and someone mentioned that bolt cutters could easily go through the rear wheel and tire....

    John

  • this man obvious has a screw lose

  • This site seems like it's the cheapest for most u-locks.
    http://www.saundersonsecurity.co.uk/acatalog/Bicycle_U_Locks.html
There's weights on there too which is handy to know. The fahgettaboudit is twicw as heavy as the evo 2000 mini! And twice as expensive!!!

  • As D locks are supposed to provide protection from bolt cutters, locking them round a piece of your bike (rim) that can easily be chopped with them sounds silly to me.

I also heard that thieves can cut through all your spokes and bend the rim so that it fits through your rear triangle and get your bike that way.

Better than lean locking I suppose, but I wont be doing it anytime soon

  • unless your bike is some carbon fibre wonder bike, no thief is gonna bend no rim, nor are they gonna power tool it. i still reckon most theives are just kids with bolt cutters, they won't be bothered getting through 2 D-locks. This is, of course, asssuming you don't lock it overnight on kingsland road or something.

During the day and if I am stopping an hour or less I use one lock and lock it up somewhere where it can be seen, after dark I use two, and I never leave it out overnight

  • best lock is my AK-47... i dilibetly leave carbon road frames in brixton, and dalston, and sit in the bushes with a full clip and wait...

  • I used to leave my old beater outside shops and just disconnect the brakes. Figured if anyone grabbed it and rode off they'd be under a bus in five minutes...

Doesn't really work with fixies though.

  • A trick I use on my roadie is to tighten up the brakes by screwing out the barrel adjusters.
If I've leant the bike up somewhere to get food, it'll stop some cnut making a quick getaway with it.

  • take the pedals off? any one thought of that, or just one pedal off...

  • That sounds like more hassle than just locking it

  • a lot of bikes just get lifted and carried away, not ridden.

    lock it or lose it.

  • The latest LCC mag had stats along the lines of 90% of bikes stolen are stolen whilst locked outside. Only 1% of bikes are stolen from houses. Not sure what happens to the other 9%.

  • 9% stolen by unreputable bike shops.

  • 9% are stolen while in a transient state corresponding to overlapping indoors/outdoors wavefunctions, before the owner has observed that his bike has been stolen.
