you need to make sure your spokes are long enough, built one up with my mate and they werent long enough for a 3 cross pattern, but its fine he just relaced it as a 4 cross

Solid is certainly the word. They are bomb proof.
I ride them, they take a battering.
Now, ride quality... that's something else. But then you wouldn't be riding an ultra-stiff steel frame on the street if ride quality was the highest priority.
They do look the bomb.

not used them myself but was warned off them by those in the know that aero/deep section rims do not give a nice ride on the road.

Aero's are fine. The odd crosswind blow you sideways, but nothing to fret over.

I bent my front rim once: running late to take the Eurostar, I had not inflated my tyres with a foot pump, but was planning to do it upon arrival in Paris. The alleycat was at 2PM in Paris, my train at 10am in London, and just after passing Blackfriars bridge at 9.30, I hit a small pothole. 2 flats in one go, bent front rim!
Ran to the train, changed and patched my tubes, arrived at 1pm in Paris, rode - ran to a shop, got my bent wheel repaired and off I went...just a small velocity-related story sorry.

Le Car, do you know of a good bike shop in Paris ...? I ask because the last time I went to a bike shop in Paris they fitting my Chris King headset with a hammer and a bit of old pipe and they fitted it upside down. I went out and bought my own tools after that.

no real good bike shops in Paris for fixed matters.
Cycles Laurent on BD Voltaire near république is OK, and there is a tiny workshop rue de L'aqueduc near gare du nord where the guy is a moddy bastard, but knows his shit. (he's the one who fixed my bent rim).
he's seeing more and more guys looking for track stuff now, and is notoriously non-friendly sometimes. -

Velocitys are not specifically light, or comforable or cheap. If you want a nice comfortable ride go for 36spoke medium profile or even low rims. They'll stay in one piece longer aswell cos the're not so rigid.

x4 crows foot /radial on the non drive side that would put him in a bad mood...?

They give quite a bumpy ride on the road then? or not?
I've got Mavic CXP22s at the moment, and the eyelets aren't flush with the rim, they come away either side of the rim where it's profiled. It bugs me for some reason, and the spoke tension isn't even that high :-/

I used Velocity rims as my race wheels for at least 3 seasons of crit racing, training, commuting (my coach was all about specificity - so ride the ONE bike).
I weigh 95kg+. I crash HARD. Most of the strength in wheels is down to the build and NOT the individual parts. Mine went out of true once when I hit a steel railing at 30kph+ on a street circuit - only slightly out, mind you. The guy who built my wheels, Mick from Croydon Cycleworks, was there and fixed them on the spot.
I believe they are Australian-made rims (bet you lot don't want 'em now!) so they are actually cheaper than the Mavic options in Oz. I cannot fault them with my experience. Oh, they were 32H, laced to light American Classic hubs. -

Deep Vs are a little heavy and quite stiff but they build into very strong and attractive wheels. I've had one on my front for a few years and never needed to true that bugger.
Ride quality is heavily dependent on wheel build, frame etc so its hard to generalise but in terms of feeling from the road, the wheel feels very similar to a Mavic CXP-33.
If you want a plusher ride, build the front with double-butted spokes. But its bloody London and its full of pot holes and rough edges, I would take a stronger wheel over 'comfort' any day.

would you get rims sent via post i have seen what the baggage handlers do to suitcases at heathrow would my rims arrive looking a biscuit cutter out of true before it even gets laced ?

Depends how well they are packed.
I shipped one of my bikes over from Oz and it arrived with a fscked skewer. Small price to pay and it wasn't packed THAT well, ie. no cross-bracing in the box.
Where would you get them from? Ask how they pack the rims and get postal insurance.
Maybe I should bring a truckload of Deep-Vs back from Oz.. I can see a market :) -

Mavic CXP33 are true work horses, as is the open Pro..
Never ridden Velocity’s look a bit bit bling to me, no offense to anyone riding them (showoffs) I’ve got me some campy high flange record pista hubs in 28 and when the tooth fairy next pays a visit I’m going to lace them to these DT muthalovin SWISS babies.
But in silver. Shit there Swiss, like penknives and cuckoo clocks and stolen gold. Same price as Velocity a little bit less Beyonce.. -

Deep V rims look cool, i'm thinking about getting a pair, but Mavic cpx22 are stronger, Ambrosio even better...neither look as flash as the ozzie rims.

hmmm those swiss rims looks the biz but i have a 36hole hi flange campy record hub so it doesn't look like the rims would fit it.
i know what you mean about the velocities lots about now but i like the funky colours..... any other good rims come in funky colours and 36h
was gonna get a white rim or possibly red or blue i've been looking for the open pro 36h blue anodized but they seem to be discontinued now and rare
anybody got any ?

One nice thing about Deep Vs is that they're really easy to de-logo. Always liked the look of those DTSwiss rims but hate the logo. Can you remove it?
Stef: BTW what evidence you citing that Mavic CXP-22s are stronger than Deep Vs? Just curious.
Thinking about getting some deep v rims... they look so good, plus I want to go fixed as opposed to just singlespeed at the moment on my Cotic Roadrat.
Anyone else here use them? Do they build up to a nice solid wheel? I'll probably use them with surly hubs, i'd like phil wood ones but they are just way too expensive :(
