  • Get the ones with velcro. As opposed to other brands, the ratchet is very good indeed but not worth paying extra £50. Several friends of mine actually said they preferred the days when cycling shoes were all velcro (as according to them you could get a better fit, even if it was by a few mm's). But then again, velcros wear out and cannot be replaced (at least not officially).

  • Depends on the fit, I like shoes to be as tight as possible so ratchet is great but Velcro will do the job

  • I've got genius 5.5 from '06 (ratchet), and previous to that some velcro'd Adidas Tri shoes. The velcro was more forgiving and allowed more movement at the top of my foot and the ratchet is more stable and keeps my foot in position with less pressure.

In the end it's down to comfort and use, will you be training and going on long rides, or commuting or both?

  • Mainly long rides and commuting but also track and tt when I finally finish building the track bike. I do have some genius 5.5s that I'm contemplating returning. But they fit so well they feel like they're custom made.

  • Honestly, I do think so, it's much more secure than the velcro, and you can fine tune it easily while riding.

Velcro also get weaker over time, which remind me to go to Tooting to get my velcro repaired for a small fees.

  • I have a pair of sidi dominators that I bought for touring purposes (I ride genius 5 normally). I didn't realise that they had much less ventilation than the genius's. Turns out a long day in the saddle leads to a smell capable of knocking out a dung beetle.

Am going touring next week so need a quick fix. I'm thinking about poking holes through all the holes already there. These holes currently are blocked off by a second layer of lorica and hence are useless. see photo

I can't think of anything for the bits at the front of the shoe (the two U shaped bits), would be nice if they were mesh like my genius's but I foresee my ruining the shoe if I start poking holes out there.

Any thoughts? Am I going to ruin the shoes?

  • Alternatively, if anyone has some eagle 5's in 43.5 and want to swap for my dominators, give me a shout.

  • Anyone have any idea where to get replacement rubber sole bits for Dragon 2's?

People apparently used to get them from Condor but as far as I know, Condor don't stock Sidi anymore. I've considered Fitzrovia cycles but I guess I'll have to pop in and have a look.

  • That was my first guess as well but I think it might be the actual carbon composite replacement rather than the actual sole bits. I've found a few German sites (like this for example - http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/mtb-sohle-srs-grey-red-17249/wg_id-1294) where you can get the replacement bits for Dragon 3 so I'll get in touch with Sidi and ask them whether they would fit Dragon 2's.

  • Have you tried Brixton Cycles?
They were one of the few places to have Sidi spares (straps for old Dominators) when I was looking last year.

  • no i'm pretty sure my link^^^ is for the rubber grippy bits. the carbon sole is also available here: http://www.sidicafe.co.uk/sidi-mtb-srs-carbon-sole.html (you can always email them to ask anyway).
although if BC can order in I would favour them anyway.

  • Ah yes, you're right. £40 seems to be a bit overkill for a bit of rubber, provided Sidi confirm my suspicion that Dragon 3 and Dragon 2 bits are interchangeable, I'll get them from bike-discount.de

  • How big a change is a half size? I was sold some 42.5 mega dominators a few years ago which were right at first but fine after a bit of breaking in, but now all I can find is 43s... Are they likely to be okay?

  • I ride 43.5 genius 5 shoes. Tried some 44 ergo 3 shoes when I saw a good deal on ebay. Too big. Heel kept sliding up against the back of the shoe. Sold them on

  • Good price that. Ta

  • FYI I saw these earlier. They look good for touring, if you can do MTB cleats.

Hmmm... Was worried someone would say that. Well, have ordered the 43s, fingers crossed they fit okay. Can't find 42.5 megas anywhere.

  • Trying out Speedplay's so bought a pair of these in Black/Fluro:

With vocher code "Bank10" under £100 delivered.

  • yeah but megas feel pretty big compared with normal width at the same size, so might be ok.

  • I went from 43 genius 5s to 43.5 wires and seem to be ok, could be the heel closure system. Wires have a bigger toe box compared to ergo 3s / older sidis.

  • Going to be putting my in vgc black dominators 43.5 on the classifieds soon, drop me a message if you are interested.

  • Are they mega fit?

  • So first ride with my sidi wires here in France has turned into a massive disappointment. Not really the ideal fit and still too narrow for my wide feet.

Anyone want to buy worn once sidi wire in white size 44? Will try bont and the heat moulding.
