  • That just takes the piss tbf.

  • Those Cycle Task force bods should probably pay them a visit though...

I wonder if they ever have visited that place. Doubt it. Great account. I remember having my (admittedly not that expensive) Raleigh mtb nicked when i was still a teenaged cyclist. I was so angry and upset, knowing full well that i would never see my bike again.
Someone tried to nick another of my bikes more recently from outside my house. The place i lived then had a little bike rack in the garden. Some crim drove up to the house and made more noise than a skeleton wanking in a biscuit tin as he tried in vain to get through two d-locks.
That bike survived and still bears the scars on the top tube. Wish i had got out of the house in time to catch him, my housemate scared him off.

  • It seems that I'll be getting the Metropolitan Police press releases on bike theft from now on:

A cycle thief has been jailed for 12 weeks and given an 18 month Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) for stealing two bikes in Southwark.

Harry Garratty, 26 years (07/11/1986) of Raymouth Road, SE16 was sentenced at Camberwell Magistrates Court on Friday 1 February after pleading guilty to two counts of theft of a pedal cycle.

On 31 January officers from Southwark Safer Transport Team, part of the Transport for London funded Safer Transport Command, were carrying out a covert bicycle operation in London Bridge as part of Project Cycle Ops - a partnership initiative to tackle cycle theft in the Capital.

Officers witnessed Garratty approach a locked bicycle in Duke Street Hill, which he then attempted to ride off on after cutting the lock.

He was detained and arrested by officers who discovered he was on court bail in connection with another theft of pedal cycle offence on 18 October 2012 at Canada Water Library SE16.

He was charged with theft of a pedal cycle and appeared at Camberwell Magistrates Court on 1 February, where he pleaded guilty to the London Bridge offence as well as the offence in Canada Water.

He was jailed for a total of 12 weeks and given an ASBO, which bans him from entering the London Bridge area for 18 months

Superintendent Stuart Trayler, Safer Transport Command, said: "Project Cycle Ops is using a range of tactics to successfully tackle cycle theft in the capital as this result demonstrates.

"Cycle theft is a crime that can have a considerable impact on victims. The MPS, its policing partners, and Transport for London will continue to target those involved and arrest them wherever possible."

We encourage cyclists to Follow the Three R's:

Record - Keep a record for yourself of the frame number, make and any other marks that can identify your bike if it is stolen. The Cycle Taskforce run a number of bike marking events, details can be found at http://content.met.police.uk/Article/Cycle-marking-events/1400005859885/
    1400005859885

Register - There are a number of websites where cyclists can register the details of their bikes and any distinguishing features/ frame numbers etc. The MPS have recently selected BikeRegister as the preferred cycle online registration service - www.bikeregister.com.

Report - If your bike is stolen then please make sure that you report it to the police and provide as many details as you can, such as frame number, make, distinguishable marks. Bike theft is a significantly under-reported crime. Reporting the theft will enable us to check databases
and contact the owner once the bike is recovered.

This guy sounds like small fry; the police are also hoping to arrest bigger operators.

  • That guy'd definitely a thieving bastard! He's got a lovely looking Isaac Kelvin for sale at £350!

Garmin-Sharp bikes stolen before Tour of Mediterranean’s Mont Faron stage

Team set to withdraw from race

The Garmin-Sharp team is facing a likely withdrawal from the Tour of the Mediterranean today following the shock realisation that sixteen race bikes were stolen overnight from the team hotel in Aix en Provence.

Mechanics discovered this morning that the team truck containing the bicycles had been broken open and the majority of its contents removed.

Team soigneur Matt Rabin made the news public, stating on Twitter that ‘unscrupulous local scallywags’ had stolen all the bikes, despite precautions taken.

“The car was parked up against the back of the truck as is standard, but they moved the car & moved it back, unbelievable,” he wrote.

Garmin-Sharp climber Dan Martin had been looking forward to the Mont Faron stage but indicated that he would likely not be able to start. “Please RT. Stolen bikes. 16 brand new di2 equiped cervelo R5. Still with race numbers. #couldntmakeitup no race today then,” he tweeted.

The team’s sole chance of competing rested on the race organisation or other teams giving them bikes to use. However the situation is clearly not ideal, with the precise setup of their own bikes very difficult to replicate at such short notice.

In the last few minutes team rider Michel Kreder has indicated that such an offer was made, but the team won’t carry on. “Latest news.. Different teams want to give us bikes to race on.. But it's not the same feeling as our own bikes so we will not race today.”

The team’s riders have appealed for people to watch out for the bikes on Ebay and other such marketplace sites.

Thieves have struck other teams in the past, with Team Type I losing its bikes in March 2011. It was forced to withdraw from the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali as a result.

    Ouch!

  • wow.
choosing and taking r5s all di2'd up takes some knowledge though - doubt it were 'local scallywags' as they say..
    bastards, whoever they are.

  • Hey,
I've just seen this on gumtree ...? £150...531 custom painted frame 'set up by a bike pro'....mostly new parts...

toooo fricking good to not be pinched...if it isn't well...how the f*ck does it end up that cheap...?

is it anyones? be quick...at that price he'll be beating them off with a stick,...shame it's not the owner doing him...tho I don't want to judge him too soon...I can't see how it's not pinched...

  • jesus ^ thats awful.

    will keep a lookout

  • Seems dodgy - Kuota Kharma / wheels etc - his feedback is from the same buyer for different bikes - which seems odd...

  • tragic

  • Not to derail, but here's an encouraging success story (from the States);

  • Hello cyclists,

The Met Police just contacted me to let me know that a bicycle was stolen from a bike rack outside Social Science/Innovation Building on Whiskin Street yesterday (Thursday 14/2/13 between 1530hrs to 1545hrs).
Officers arrested two males for the theft and the police have recovered the bike which is now at Islington Police Stn. The bike is a ladies black Falcon Richmond.

If this is your bike, please let me know and I’ll put you in touch with the officer who contacted me.

Received the above. Doubt the owner is on here, but on the off chance. Drop me a PM if it's yours and I'll put you in touch.

  • Thats more than F*cking awful...thats fucking horrible...whereabouts do you live? is it a london thing?

Bikes were stolen from a house in streatham overnight, so it is a London thing, please keep a lookout guys

  • Just spotted a guy riding a SS I'm certain was not his own.

Black cougar track frame (vintage?), white decals, risers, flat pedals, black chainring.
Frame either 50 or 52 cm.

Spotted early Sat morning in Shoreditch High St. There is no way in hell the wretch riding it would have the tools/money/interest in building up a nice conversion like that.

  • And that is what we call "social profiling"

  • sure it's not just a hipster who's perfected his look?
