i still think d-locking the bike thief on the neck to a bike rack is the best option.
no need for abus or kryptonite, just that cheap thing from a pound shop will do. -

i second that edmundane, like the stocks, best humillation ever

a chain works as well. get a crap chain, wrap him up tight. then use bolt croppers (preferrably near his neck or his private bits) to free him. he sure will piss & shit in his pants and never dare to steal a bike again.

While that would be good fun, I think you need to follow him home so you know where he lives then catch him in the act and tell him where he lives e.t.c. Find out his name before hand as well.
Ok do like the police did one time put a fake ad in a paper saying they where a production company and filming for a t.v show, watch the people turn up and lure them in to some dastidly trap. do some thing like take all valubles off of them and dump them in the middle of a Glasgow estate wearing england shirts.

stolen bike story no1
i was eating some chips on endell st a few years ago after work and some street trash walked up to a bike with a kryptonite £100 chain on it he had it off in 4 seconds. i only realised he stole it when i went to get my bike and noticed he'd just left the lock unchained on the floor.
stolen bike story no2
i found one of my stolen bikes (had two knicked in 2 months) on borough high st, called the police and after a lot of dithering around they accepted that it was my bike. the police had lost all the details when i reported my bike stolen but i'd imported the frame from america and built it up single speed had receipts for all the stuff photos of it blah blah.
they said if i turned up to the station with proof they would give it back which they did the next morning,
fine i thought until i got a call a few days later saying they needed to see my documents again and the bike so i turned up to the station and they promptly took the bike off me saying it had been legally bought from a polce auction and i was not the owner any more.
this all because they lost my original report. i asked how i was gonna get home after freaking out for a bit, they kindly showed me the bus stop outside.

ahhhh i nearly ripped my shirt off in a fit of rage!
that must of been so frustrating......petrol bombs would have come to mind -

It had legally been bought from a police auction? So they sold your bike because they couldn't identify it, because they lost the info, and then took it back from you. Sounds like court case.

them selling stolen goods??? 8^)

i went to the press but they wern't interested, it really pissed me off and i spent hours on the phone in the following days trying to get it back.
i'm off work now for a week or two after the police hit me off my bike (yeah i have all the luck) so i'm gonna follow it up some more. -

oh my god!!! the shirt is ripped off now!!
i hate the police! -

I'd definitely get the advice of a lawyer on this one. If you provided them with the means to identify your bike before or during the time they had it, then it should never have gone to auction. It also sounds like they auctioned it well before the time it's supposed to be kept for.
What the police are supposed to do once they've auctioned something and the original owner turns up I have no idea. I'm guessing it favours the winner of the auction because they can't hold on to the goods forever and the item was not identifiable. But in your case the item was not identifiable because of the police's incompetence, not from any lack of effort on your part.
They have effectively sold stolen goods, because they were given the means to give them back. I'd definitely look into whether you could sue them for it. I'm no lawyer (I'm a designer), but I have successfully sued the police for negligence before.

nique da police
Anyway. Word of advice to all of you, any time you have to speak to a Police Officer ALWAYS take their badge number. Even if it's not for anything serious, it will help if you have to deal with them in the future and they'll usually react well to someone who knows who the system works.

thought id post up my paddy that got stolen a few months back. shit pic i know. the front reflector is broken off but the fixture remains. Its an 05/06 model i think. the hue of the blue is lighter than the current model. nicked from outside whitechapel saino's on a saturday lunchtime. Loads of people around. But no cctv coverage as they were doing a rebuild.
Spoke to the security guard in the car park and he mumbled something about a bunch of kids messing with a bike and cycling off. Fuckin Useless c##t -

My 2007 Langster got pinched yesterday. I know it's only a langster but it did the job. It was on Holborn Viaduct and disapeered between 12 and 3pm! It's got bull horns and fancy bontrager brakes. I guess it'll be in Brick Lane on Sunday unless it was one of you lot with a steel frame who secretly coveted a nice harsh ugly Langster?
Police said I should ride a crappy bike to and from work so it doesn't get stolen. Thanks!
Oh yeah, just to add to a brilliant 24 hours, the day before on the way home from work a foreign ped stepped out into a cycle lane and I braked and went over the handlebars and then continued to brake with my face! 7 stitches. -

ouch, sorry to hear all that man.....hope you are ok and find your bike

Bad luck - out of interest, how was it locked up?
Hope you get it back, and your face heals up nicely.
Take a photo of him. Make it really obvious that you are taking a photo of him..
