  • I think I might know the person who's face you've partially blurred and I can certainly state if it is him that he is as honest as they come.

Do you know his name? if so pm me his fist name as if it is the same guy his is fairly distinctive.

  • Whats his website?

  • He may be "honest", but if he had a funny feeling about the bike he should not have bought it. To then sell it on again is not the act of someone with a good conscience, it's just a way of moving the problem item on to another person.

  • Sorry James, speak up I can't hear you from right up there on that high horse of yours.

  • Show me the stolen goods in my possession, or that I have handled.

  • Given your charming PM, I am less than inclined to delete my previous post or remove the links.

  • Surely he knows who he sold it too?

  • have him prosecuted for handling stolen goods

you must spread rep before giving it to dancing james again...

  • Well said

  • Well, I deliberately didn't include the original links or the guy's id. - he's got to be taken at his word in the end.

I just wonder why he did so much to the bike if he sold it on after a couple of months. According to him, he traded it at yes, Brick Lane, to someone he didn't know for £300.

If only bikes were as easy to track down as people!!..

  • Well good luck, its pretty distinctive

  • Cheers - maybe in another 2 years!?

  • Having a stolen bike in your possession does not make you guilty of handling stolen goods - suspecting them of being stolen is not enough.

Suspecting them of being stolen is indeed not enough ([ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handling_stolen_goods[/ame] and http://www.lawteacher.net/Handling.php) both confirm this.

However, the fact that he said "he knew it was probably not legit and 'felt funny' with it" may well I think pass the knowledge or belief test as I read it. IANAL though, and its a moot point, as the police are not likely to be interested anyhow. :)

If he did turn out to still have it, then that would now be a different matter, and if he disposed of it now, then I suspect he certainly could be prosecuted, but again, IANAL.

  • "A person handles stolen goods if (otherwise than in the course of stealing), knowing or believing them to be stolen goods he dishonestly receives the goods, or dishonestly undertakes or assists in their retention, removal, disposal or realisation by or for the benefit of another person, or if he arranges to do so.[1]"

He knew it was "probably not legit".

I expect further abusive PM's and neg rep for posting on this thread.

  • Jimbo - it could be argued that some of your 'adventures' could be quite happily filed under common assault if you are observing the letter of the law

The chap you chose to name on a public forum is, in my experience, a pretty sound bloke.

I don't condone the buying of stolen bikes but I would hazard a guess that the fella in question bought it and suffered a post purchase 'oooh this ain't quite right'

I'm not sure that you would want your deets plastered all over the shop connecting you to various of your misdemeanours eh buddy?

  • Someone nicked the entire front brake assembly off my bike on Columbia Rd this evening. Can't have been worth more than about £15 max, 5 year old stock tekro brake and dirty harry lever. Now I have no brakes.
Anyway, if you come across it, would appreciate a call: 07717820777. Cheers.

  • that's so bizarre! can only think that a cyclist must have been in desperate need of a brake because one of theirs broke or something?

Haha, I'd love to know in what situation you'd be in such desperate need for a front brake that you stole someone elses!

It seems so pointless. Given the aspirational location and the fact they had an allen key my first thought was it was someone who thought the lever looked cool and wanted it for themselves. Cannot understand why they took the brake itself as it's rubbish! Whyever they did it, I hope it was worth it.

I don't mind riding without brakes but I prefer having one, especially as my commute is pretty ugly. Oh well. At least they didn't take my bike and leave the brake.

Someone had stolen just my front brake cable once! Can only assume theirs broke :/ they did a good job though, didn't damage anything and didn't sheer the heads off of my bolts so I wasn't too pisssed (I would have been if I wasn't riding fixed)!

  • I think component theft can be a way of disabling a bike so that the owner leaves it there overnight thus theft of the rest of the bike is easier to execute.

  • Surely it's easy to slash the tyres rather than carefully take off a brake.

  • But a slashed tyre would hold up gumtree ad posting!
You only need 1 or 2 allen keys to get a brake set off - wouldnt take more than a minute.
I'm not saying this is what happened - maybe the person did desperately want that particular brake, but it can be the case that by disabling a bike in some way, a thief can come back later with the appropriate tools to get the whole thing.

  • Me and my mates bike got stolen on Sunday at approx 3pm.

    • Thomson elite 25.4 stem.
    • Green "Mr JxC" vinyl stuck on left side of bike.

My mates bike is a black non branded bike and specs are:
