Stolen bikes

  • STOLEN CONDOR PISTA, black, about 7 years old, fixed, Selle Italia saddle, straight bars, bit scruffy, stolen yesterday morning from outside chemists on Blackstock road (Finsbury Park). Reward for return. Anyone get's offered one let me know. Not my bike but a friends and he's understandably peeved.

    Thanks all

  • We all assumed that if it had been sold on, it would have been taken to brick lane and sold straight away (was taken on a sunday afternoon after all). Otherwise (and I'm hoping this is the case), it hadn't been sold yet and the thief is just retarded. At least, no one approached any of us for the 45 mins of so that we were there with the police getting it checked out then cut free - there were a couple of people hanging round who seemed suspiciously nervous though.

  • Some more good news today. Just cycled to Victoria Park Village to see some guy eating a bag of chips while standing over my mate's bicycle that was nicked about a year ago, quickly called up reinforcements and got the bike back from him!

Probably only spotted it because I was looking at every bicycle for the Bianchi stolen on Saturday, truly bizarre but another win vs the bike thieves!

Someone stumble across my Specialized pleeaese ;( Head's need to roll and my bank balance needs to recover..

  • Following my amazing bike being stolen, I tried to refer the theft to the task force team. Firstly they wouldn't deal with it as police had closed file day after theft.

Not sure I understand why the file was closed? Did you report it to another section of the police first? Then what happened to close the file?

After hassling them, I was told that there are 12 officers for the whole of London, that they dont investigate individual bike theft, but are only concerned with organised teams of bike thieves. I did point out the stupidity of his statement. I also suggested they hang out at Broadway market every sat morn. He said they don't have the staff for it.
He said they also have the important task of making sure cyclists cycle safely around London.
Wtf do they do? oh yes nothing.

I can't comment on your individual case, as I obviously don't know what happened there, but I know for a fact that the CTF certainly do a lot, and you're being unfair in suggesting that they do 'nothing'. I can understand that, as it seems to have been a frustrating conversation, but you're still wrong about that. They have a string of success stories, and a lot of people have had very satisfying experiences with their work.

The last I heard was that the CTF were 30 officers, although that is of course still not a lot for the whole of London, and their focus on gangs is a future-proof strategy that I would wholeheartedly support. I'm sure they'd be the first to admit that, like most people, they can't get everything right, but it is best for us to support them as strongly as we can so that they get more resources to intensify their work. The existence of the CTF is one thing that is changing the focus of policing in London. I'm sure you welcome that, too, and that one bad experience won't change this.

  • Hi guys.... a bit of a random one. We had a 'another' bike stolen from outside our office on albert embankment in vauxhall the other day. The random thing was that the tealeaf rode onto site on a fixed gear which they left behind when they rode off on the bike they stole. I can presume the bike they left behind was stolen too.

The security guard here knows i ride "one of those bikes ;)" and asked if it was mine as i've had a bike nicked from outside the building recently too. Unfortunately it isn't but if anyone has had a specialized fixed gear/single speed stolen recently then it might be sitting in the security office at 89 albert embankment.

02075829832 if you think it could be yours. The security guys will ask you to describe what you have lost to see if it matches what they've got.

    hope it can help someone....
    Andy

  • I used to work there. The state of the locking and regularity of theft was silly.

  • I don't think the perp has quite got the hang of 'bicycle tag of bike'

  • My file was closed 24 hrs after it was opened due to lack of leads to investigate. Its the same standard wording that I got last year when my bike got nicked. I reported it to both hackney and islington police- it was on the border betw the two. Both closed it and one islington officer told me that the same team investigating bike crime also investigates 'serious' theft and robbery and a bike was not high up his list of priorities. I would guess that if a car worth over £1000 got stolen he would investigate its whereabouts. In addtion there was a CCTV camera overlooking the post it was locked to, which was why i bothered to report it to both boroughs. Both police forces told me they would not be looking thro the CCTV as thats not something they do!

In relation to the CTF, Im sure they do a lot and Im sure they are as underfunded and over stretched as most public bodies. However I do think that if you tackle places like broadway market, kingsland rd waste, etc and follow up reports of stolen bikes on gum tree for example, you would find 'gangs' of theives selling. As it stands bike theft is probably one of those most lucrative high cash career moves going. I dont think a team of 12 or 30 is big enough. Obviously I would support it if it increased in size and presence.

As it goes, I think Ive just seen my bike on gum tree. I rang the police to tell them. they advised me not to go and no, they would not be investigating it despite the fact that dude selling wont give me his name, or number, wants to meet at a station only, no test drive allowed and view to buy with cash only. If that isnt blatently hot property I dont know what is.

This is a pretty typical plod response from someone who doesn't know bikes. Years and years ago whilst on holiday I had my shed broken into, which must have taken some serious tools, shed is a half underground stone built vault of a building with 3ft+ thick stone walls, a serious weight of slate flags on the roof and a solid oak door with a secondary door bolted to the inside of that one. They drilled many holes into the door around the areas where bolts and locks were fitted, then jigsawed them out. then removed motorbike chain (again cut the lock from the wooden doors obviosuly), then once inside they had a few lawnmowers, tools, a shit kids bike, my decent XC bike (£1.5k+) and my DH bike of the time (£2.5k+), both of which were on a motorbike chain into a concrete anchor, which they painstakingly chipped out of the ground, and must have taken a good 1ft cube of concrete with them over 2x 6' fences with the three bikes all stuck together with said chain. How nobody saw or heard them I shall never know.
But anyway, long story long, plod were not interested as its
*'just some bikes in a garden shed mate innit' *
when I told him the value his tune rapidly changed to..
'well you mean motorbikes don't you, in which case, ring this officier has he is dealing with a spate of specialised targeted motorbike thefts'
    I said no, bikes.
*"there aren't no 'push' bikes worth that much, now stop wasting my time" *
and he hung up on me.
Rang a few other stations until eventually turfed one of them out of bed to come and look, which then enabled me to get a 'crime number' so that I could claim on house insurance.

House insurance then pulled the usual trick of 'we need any items of more than £2.5k value to be outlined in the policy at the point of purchase. even though at point of purchase 'any number of items up to £2.5k single item value are fine and do not need to be noted'

    my argument >>>> 3x bikes + 2x lawnmowers + 1x tool box = 1x crime + 3x bikes + 2x lawnmowers + 1x tool box.
    insurance companies argument>>>>>>> 3x bikes + 2x lawnmowers + 1x toolbox = 1x crime + 1x 'bikes chained together' + 1x 'lawnmowers' + 1x toolbox
therego a maximum claimable of £2.5k for £4.5k of bikes, deduct 'they are more than 1year old = only 25% of RRP value
Insurance companies name? **DIrect line home insurance. avoid them like fucking daytime tv.

**this was about 8yrs ago, but I would not believe their lies that they have changed.
All phone conversations I now have with banks, insurance, general toss pots are recorded from my end, their name and employee number extracted on tape at the beginning of the conversation.
FFS i'm only 24yrs and I'm about as bitter as the average 80yr old. / mini sat morn rant over.

  • just a tad..

  • Copy and paste into google any telephone numbers you are suspicious about. Its surprising how many numbers have different "names"/"bikes" attached. Then made sure you report them to gumtree/ebay etc....
