Spotted a possibly stolen bike this evening at work in wandsworth evans,
Vivalo track f+f around 54cm gray ish I think
Lino straight bars in silver with no grips
dura ace track hubs with pink deep v rear and what looked like a H plus son front rim in black
No brakes, and only toe clips with no straps. We fitted a new bontrager race tyre (blue with black centre strip) for the "owner"
although as they left my colleague mentioned that the owner had said something about just buying the bike for £10 !!!They had gone before we had a chance to do anything but now I feel it my duty to report this in case somebody is missing it somewhere.
In the event that it isn't stolen and the person was the legitimate owner, I apologise in advance if you are apprehended in the street by random vigilante cyclists.

Been a long time ppl, I'm back but for a sad reason, my trusted steed was stolen by so e builders last Sunday night from the "secure" car park at my house in bethnal green.
One of a kind red track ellsowrth 58 cm, carbon fork and s works seatpost, red and black specialized toupe saddle, sugino 75 cranks in black, White raceblades, araya rims, goldtec hubs 32h, Thomson stem don't remember the size but it was short, risers and ah front wheel missing.
I have kinda given up on this already but I thought I'd spread the word around as I have no Internet connection yet.
It sucks but hey, in time I'll get to build a new bike!
Picture is somewhere in te forum, as I have no broadband I cannot upload one... -

makes me real sad to see so many nice bikes get in the wrong hands
anyway, I think I seen my old GT chucker stolen a few months before Christmas, i'm pretty sure it was by chavs looking for a quick buck
but when i saw it it had loads of new parts, some one put a lot of money into making it good, so im pretty sure a serious rider now has it, be tricky prooving its mine as well from what i saw, it had a new set of brakes, tires, rims painted, forks painted, new tires, post, stem and seat, only things that looked a bit like mine were the brake levers and pedals (it was dark so i couldn't see great)
i think i seen it around a few times but its pretty average colours for a chucker, do i chase the owner or just let it be? the bike was never that great anyway, it needed a lot of work, if i got it back id probably just sell it
-
• #5758
chase them down, and check the serial number
it its stolen then they should return it to you, their fault for buying a stolen bike
-
• #5759
serial number, lost it?
Some bike shops, or actually, Brixton Cycles, I don't know about others, keep them. If you know the make, size etc. and remember what month you got it, there is a chance that the store you got it from have your frame number. That's what I did.
-
• #5760
thing is, I got it second hand and have no idea of the serial number, dumb mistake I know! another thing I learned the hard way
actually I passed the same place today and I spoke to the owner, I saw the bike again and if I did try get it back it would be so hard trying to prove to the police its mine because he's changed so much, the major things to tell it was mine are gone, like red cables, odd stem bolts, none stock stuff basicly, but its all replaced! he even has the tires i want...
i think the dude was bull shitting to me but i really cant do anything about it :'(
shit.
edit:
just been looking through some pictures and way more sure its mine, there is quite a lot of chips in the paint, if i took those pictures to the police, think they could do something about it? i'm only a small dude who cant fight, if i just try and take it id probably get battered to be honest

get in contact with the person you bought it off
scratches seems a of bit hard sell for police to grab a guys bike.
-
• #5762
yeah true, scratches are a long shot, ill see if i have the mail from when i got the bike
maybe worth just popping in the police station and see what they can do? i doubt they will do anything, didnt do anything before...
-
• #5763
You can always come up to him and says "I know you know that this bike is stolen, and I know half the stuff you put on that bike is your, so if you can give me the part that you remove from my old bike, or I can go to the police and get them to give me my stolen bike back from you"
That work for me one time, worth trying methinks.
-
• #5764
I'm surprised the thieves haven't cottoned on to that idea yet...
steal bike
take pics and make note of frame no and give to intimidating accomplice.
sell obviously stolen bike to unscrupulous punter.
punter walks off, accomplice follows punter, away from point of sale confronts punter saying that's my bike the frame no is blah, give it back or I'll call the police and you'll get done for handling stolen goods.
unscrupulous punter shits themselves and gives back bike
thieves sell bike to next punter etc.the way I see it if they were busy re-selling the same bike they wouldn't have to steal as many and the bulk of the loss would be shifted onto the wankers who buy stolen bikes and fuel the trade. win/win. there's also more chance you'd see your bike at the markets as they'd go through a couple of times. perhaps we should organise a sit-down with the thieves and run it past them.
-
• #5765
I hope there are no bike thieves reading that post ^^^ $$$ £££
-
• #5766
on the plus side, the long term effect of this strategy would be to discourage the purchase of stolen bikes.

but he has the major stuff like frame, forks, wheels, crankset and so on, the stuff i get back isnt much use unless its on the bike
so he could take his stuff off and give back mine?

In that case, can I borrow your bike for about 6 months,
hatbeard, you wanna make some dorrah?
-
• #5769
It wouldn't be a stolen bike if you borrowed it from me. You'll have to steal it.
And now you've lost the element of surprise ;-)
-
• #5770
oh no, i know, but in your theory the fear of handling stolen goods will make them shit a brick.
we can add explosives for the element of suprise (or nudity)
sorry this thread is getting de-railed. I realise there are people who have lost their bikes!

• #5771
Ok, I'm in.

My colleague Neil had his red bianchi road bike (58 I think) stolen from Bedford Row last night, before 7pm. D-locked and cabled, no sign of the lock.
It's quite a distinctive bike, bought off Maryann on here. This is it, though the forks are now black.
-
• #5773
Remember to keep an eye on Gumtree. That is where I found my stolen bike for sale.
-
• #5774
red n yellow bianchi is quite spottable...eyes are peeled!

My house just got burgled, not my flat but the communal areas, front corridor.
I live in a pretty busy street, Lower Clapton Road, and at 10:10pm (just now) some CUNT!!!
decided to kick the downstairs door and nicked my mate's Cannondale, a fully black Bad boy,
really low saddle and trimmed flat bats. It's a leisure bike, used to commute.
He was having dinner at mine and we heard a huge BANG!!.. thought it was the neighbor moving stuff
downstairs...so happens, he thought the same.
Got me really apprehensive, the BANG, so decided to take a peak.... to already not find the bike.
Someone must have watched him coming in.....dunno... FODA_SE!!!
Reported to the Polize already, waiting for CSI officers to collect.... solefingerprints!?
Pissed off.... sad. depressed. fuck.
Depends, innit. My front hub's Campag (under a layer of shite). The rear's Miche (under an even thicker layer of shite). On which note, good work Miche - after two winters the axle ends are corroded to the point that the nuts won't undo all the way, but the bearings are still smooth.
