Stolen bikes

  • The more distinctive the bike, the harder it is to find it.

Henry's tartar Geekhouse was stolen, and end up in Somerset of all places after a couple or more months.

  • My colleague from work had her bike stolen lastnight (19th August) outside Holburn station - it was locked to the bike park thingy by the t-junction where Procter St. meets High Holburn.

The bike was fairly distinctive, very small frame (~49cm) ladies Giant road bike in baby blue and silver, circa 2007. She's writing a proper description which i'll update with when she sends it through.

    Here is a picture of the bike from the Giant website;

    http://www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-GB/bikes/women/187/15041/?collections_id=2

    EDIT, here is her description;

    Giant tcr w.
    Ladies road bike,
    Baby blue and silver
    Black bar tape
    Shimano 105 brakes
    Black shimano saddle
Mavic Ksyrium Equipe rear wheel, standard giant front wheel.
    Stolen from Holborn 19th August.

Keep an eye out people, thanks.

I found my bike on ebay and the police were pretty useless - I ended up buying it back off the guy who'd bought it.

I'd been looking out for it for sale in london but the cunning theives had moved it to Cirencester (?!) - the guy seemed to have quite a few other bikes for sale on ebay - might be worth keeping an eye out!

  • Should have said - the sellers user name was mark.chinnock

  • spotted a beautiful black and orange de rosa in peckham, equipped with clipless pedals, ridden by dodgy guy in high tops. i think it might be stolen, unless they've started making spd high tops.

  • Just read the all thread and I am speechless. I guess the fact you dropped the word friend means that the plum has not been so helpful with the search.

    Quick q to everyone.
How would you approach the person who is selling you stolen bike at Brick Lane?

If you are looking to buy one i think you are looking in the wrong thread...

  • oh and tom i feel for you buddy, i lost a bright red dolan that i built from scratch myself, loved the thing and was disraught when it got stolen... and yeah your theory is correct, only cycle on shitty looking bikes... sad but true any thing nice will get nicked...

  • Wanna buy David's bike? http://www.gumtree.com/london/72/65344872.html

    Danny's sounds nice http://probikezone.com/678/specialized-sirrus-2009-150

Four bikes, four names, same mobile. All in last year or so. Legit?

I should have my own daytime TV series.

  • I imagine everyone who has ever had a cherished bike stolen does this but I spend most of my waking hours imagining the Bruce Lee moment when I see someone with the bike. I actually have to unclench my jaw when thinking about it.

I also worry about seeing someone riding on it, but not being able to catch them in time and watching them ride of into the distance...so near yet so far.

The bloke who thought it was a good idea to lock it in London Bridge overnight has been searching too and at the moment we are just haggling over what he should pay me to compensate. It's not easy I can tell you.

One day, somewhere, somebody will try and sell it, and I'll be waiting.

  • I used to feel the same about my bike after it was stolen, but i have to remind myself it's only a fucking bike. True I say to myself but still...... I look everyday for it thinking, one day it will turn up and I'll get it back. In all honesty however, it is unlikely, but man, i love to dream !

  • If you are looking to buy one i think you are looking in the wrong thread...

No I think you misunderstood my message. What I meant is, what if you see your bike on sale, how would you approach the seller?
Surely get the police is waste of time as they wont bother with it.

  • Just read through this thread, I feel for you Tom, it was a beauty and the fact that is has sentimental value makes it priceless. I have tried to put myself in your shoes and imagine what i would do in a similar situation with a good friend of mine. To be honest, if he is your friend, then whatever value you give him I think he should accept unquestionably. Its quite clear that youre not trying to make any kind of profiit so your friend needs to bite the bullet and cough up the value you feel its worth.

Remember though, he didn't do it on purpose, hopefully you'll be able to forgive him, but as I said, he needs to man up, accept it happened and fork out the cash, no questions asked.

    My two cents.

  • Some W@nker stole my handlebars outside West Middlesex Hospital this afternoon....Oversize bontrager stem with Easton OS bars, nice shiny silver tektro levers and right sided crosstop. White bartape and distinctive in the fact that the cable outers are different colours, white and black on left and right respectively....also had a simple front light attached....interestingly didnt take anything else leaving my seat/post etc all attached. Clipped the cables cleanly etc. Very pissed off especially because I had to fight with bus drivers for ages to get home! Not really expecting to ever hear anything about these again, but if anyone gets any info it would be much appreciated....

Surely he should pay you whatever the cost to replace the bike as closely as possible? whether the components on your bike had been used or not, doesn't affect what it will cost you to replace it. If he is arguing the I think he needs a CNRHKTTH* to set him thinking straight,

I had a red schwinn BMX stolen when I was 16, had just spent about £100 on new tyre/stem/bars (best bmx bar/stem combo i ever had ): ) it literally got stolen that day. Someone told me the estate it had supposedly ended up in, everytime I pass through now i still scour every corner for it... 8 years on! The saddest thing i always think is, it's probably in one of the back gardens in a heap of rust.

  • +1 Hovis

Last day in Holland and I'm ridnig my housmate's shit dutch bike. Kept my Krypto out cos it's more than ANYONES uses for these bikes, but if it goes missing from the car park (which us under armed guard) then I'll push the replacement money under his door before I fly.

Lets hope he coughs up (in instalments if necessary)/ you get your Bruce Lee moment and the friendship recovers.

  • We spoke via email last night and seemed to have come back to an agreement on what to pay and how to pay it so at least thats sorted. It's been a month exactly now. Do you know what. I'm not sure if I do want to build something similar now. Bury the dead and move on.

  • To be honest, that might be better than trying to recreate something you can't recreate, then being disappointed.

Maybe try to think what your dream bike would be if that one had never existed?

  • Hello you lovely bunch

Last night my brother's lovingly enhanced Charge Plug Racer (with a multi-coloured chain, yellow front tyre, blue back tyre and pink handlebars) was stolen from outside a new gallery on Fortescue Avenue, London E8 3QB‎ near London Fields.

The sods left behind just two bits of cut-off lock (these were good d-locks), neatly placed beside each other, and my bro's friend's beaten up mountain bike. Clearly discerning thieves.

Naturally we reported the theft to the police and will be checking the usual online marketplaces to see if it appears there, but I just wonder if anyone out there can advise us where else we could look? Brick Lane?

Or at least, perhaps you could take a look at the attached (sadly quite poor) photo of the bike, and let me know if you miraculously see it on your travels! It's a 'medium' frame.

It's such a distinctive bike so I fear it is already being dismantled in a workshop somewhere and reincarnated in another form but it never hurts to spread the word...

    Thanks for you time.

    Best regards,

    Alex
