I dont like that at all. It basically means that people are getting stolen bikes legitimately, from exactly the same place they'd be getting them anyway!! The police aren't going to spend enough time trying to find the rightful owner, and you can't exactly argue with someone who's bought your bike FROM THE POLICE. Really poor idea.

• #353
Oh yeah, and they give you a proper police receipt too. Basically they're legitmately selling nicked goods. Where does the money go?!?
It was a teeny weeny langster by the way. -

Yeah, brett said his was a 56. Matched his in every other respect though! maybe the thieves laundered it and it shrunk in the wash...

They're not even "real" police! Community officers have only so much rights.
Certainly just fuels the 'buy a bike from brick lane' syndrome.
Herne Hill will be having their jumble sales there next! -

cake They were selling off bikes that they'd confiscated off the little crims down there.
That is beautiful!

cake Don't know if anyone else saw this, was down brick lane early yesterday, probably around 9-9:30. Loadsa community support officers and few coppers were with some market inspector type people. They were selling off bikes that they'd confiscated off the little crims down there. Spoke to one of the community officers and he said they'd tried to track down the original owners with no luck.
Only really took notice because out of all the usual mountain bikes and hybrids there was a black Langster, chopped and flopped drops, spds etc. small size sold for £120.
I dunno how hard they try to track people down, but may be worth checkin there in the future...This news really really scares me... the police are now the fences. Not even funny.

Haven't the police always done this (to some extent) with bumble bees, Greasby's auctions and the like?
But actually going to a place that's renowned as a location for stolen bicycles and selling reclaimed stolen bikes seems to completely defeat the object, unless they're acutally educating people about bike theft and how to register bikes etc.

sounds awfully like they have confiscated them and gone "rather than taking these back and filling out forms trying to find owners we could just sell them right here right now"

It was a teeny weeny langster by the way.i found one of my stolen bikes chained up, got it back from the police when i turned up with receipts etc only to have them take it off me again when the "new" owner showed they had bought it from a police auction.i tried to get the money back that they made by selling my bike but to no avail.
thieving bastards -

Any one happen to be in bricklane on sunday and see any one selling a stubby pair of handle bars, goldfinger, thompson stem, nitto seat post and a nicely worn in brooks saddle, knicked off my bike the night before. Im so gutted best part of £220 squids and now bikeless till i can afford to replace. A very sad start to my new year!

@ OCD - my pleasure
You can buy decent risers from halfords and/or decathlon for well under a tenner FYI. Or sweet powdercoated ones from Fixed Gear London for twenty sheets
Reckon them fluro community vests are the theives' new uniform.
Seems odd they would choose to confiscate bikes and resell them at the same place!
Bricklane never fails to surprise me.
