re. Brick Lane searches.
Personally I think it's entirely possible the scrotes will have worked out people head there as soon as their bikes are nicked so holding a bike for a week or two means they massively reduce the chance of being spotted by vigilante owners.

I agree,
I was down down there looking for my bike a short while ago and over heard some of the people (illegally) selling bikes talking about the fact that people now know to look down there for them.
Apparently some have been turning up at Whitechaple market. -

anyone lost a Dolan
his other 2 bikes were 54cm, this one must be too big for him and has no back brake

I gather you never got a bike stolen. It's just a bike, but it was mine and no one had the right to take it. I used it for social events and to commute, and now all that has been disrupted.
I got my bike stolen twice, it's very annoying, but I move on,because in the end it's just a bicycle that can be replaced, it's not the
problem is, that what the buyer think when they're buying stolen bicycle "ah well, the person who got his bike stolen no doubt get a new one via insurance".

I'm surprised no one remembers their school days, when the bullies used to get away with all sorts of havoc. The options remain the same now as they did then:
Scenario 1 (aka. The Steven Segal Scenario): 500 angry cyclists, decked out with helmets, u-locks, sharpened bicycle chains, chainring-shaped throwing stars etc. descend on Brick Lane Market. Thieves clock the cyclists, start packing up. Vans block off all exits. A small, lippy thief tries his luck and gets a deadly swift beat-down. A minor ruck ensues but the sheer force of cyclists renders their efforts laughable. They get corralled into a set of stocks and members of the public are invited to pelt them with rotten comestibles. The day goes down in history and bicycle thievery rates drop to a new low which means that no one ever has to lock their bike ever again.
Scenario 2 (aka. The Considerably More Likely Scenario): A group of about 10 particularly aggy and bitter cyclists go down and start kicking off at Brick Lane Market and are dealt a severe fucking-uping. Whenever any of them cycle through Brick Lane they are targeted by any lowlife that sees them, such is the awesome power of London's thieving wankers. Several other cyclists are unfairly targeted too and the plod's stance is "that's what happens when you when you take the law into your own hands".

Scenario 1 FTW, I could easily take on 3 or more of the scrotes with a d-lock and my right fist, Righteous anger beats ignorant scum.

It's not the answer at all.
the theft will carry on stealing as long there's a market for it, beating them up won't make any difference.
it's the people who knowingly buy stolen bike who's the target, they know the bike is stolen, yet they buy it anyway.

There were a couple incident where a person has brought a stolen bike from a theft, and the owner managed to snatch it off the person who want to keep it even thought he know it belong to the owner.
the buyer know, they decided that ignorant is bliss.

Personally its not just the buyers to blame - its the thieves sometimes it pays to learn a lesson and with some people it is very hard to excercise restraint, you cant allways blame buyers we are all brought up to consume and that is what they are doing, if thieves dident see the majority of cyclists as soft touches these things wouldent happen - I can leave my bike in what most would call the "ghetto" because I will fight for my shit have done and will do, others should do the same and soon word spreads - Flame suit now put on lol

lessmann, you said that your Giant was stolen. So, how was that bike stolen? Then the £900 Haro you bought to replace it was stolen as well. So, how was that bike stolen also?
You either seem to not have luck on your side, or live in a very high crime area, or something wasn't learned from the initial bike theft.
I'm curious - what lock security did you use on the Haro, and where was it stolen from?
I think getting to the bottom of the security issue that you have, may be more abvisable than going all Rambo with some mates on a thief.

Now that's better!..........
lets just fuck em up!My thinking is that you are possibly still filled with the exuberance of youth.

I can see why people would want personal retribution on the filth that lurks down Brick Lane. Even if a few individual sellers see the wrong side of a D-Lock and an Adidas 3 stripe, that probably won't send them home with a tale between their legs never to think of doing such an act again. They will be out stealing the same afternoon as it beats working for a living. If it was bill-boarded/postered around the areas selling bikes that 'Stolen Bikes are Being Sold Here' (or similar) surely that is one move that could embarrass a few potential buyers looking for a bargain (sorry if point has already been covered). And it's these people that fuel the business. Saying that, if sellers encouter a problem with selling in an area, they just move elsewhere. Like prostitution and the police.

lessmann, there are locks that are £15 that would have protected your bike better. I'm not laughing, but the same way you got your second bike stolen, is the same as the first. You assumed the level of security you had was sufficient.
In the first case, garage storage, and you probably didn't check on your bike too regularly? Then a lock that could practically be bitten through by a Pitbull or an Akita - I'm kidding, but that was not nearly a reasonable lock to protect a bike.
I'd blame you 100% for the second theft, and you partially for the first. Instead of beating others up, I'd hope you beat yourself up......then get over to the Locks That Work thread, and at least read the original post of the thread. Read the whole thread if you have time. And, good luck with your next bike.
Don't use a light and flimsy lock when out shopping again, please. It was convenient for you, and even more convenient for the thief.
I gather you never got a bike stolen. It's just a bike, but it was mine and no one had the right to take it. I used it for social events and to commute, and now all that has been disrupted.
There are tons of things the police/authorities could do if they wanted. They're just not willing to invest time in chasing bike thieves... and thieves know this.
Try not to be so accommodating with the situation.
