OK people, here's one for you.
I ride a nice bashed up and quite wierd loooking old batavus for work (some kind soul put a londonfgss card in the wheel which lead me here), but my back up bike was stolen last friday. It's a standard issue ridgeback genesis day 03 (i know, I know), with all the trimmings, sans back wheel. some fucker, whom I'll come back to, broke in the window of the garage and stole it and my housemate's ridgeback somethingorother lady bike. (Ill get the details off her). Any way, we thought no more of it, scoured brick lane with no joy, and then at about 12 on saturday got a call from a nieghbour saying someone was in our shed. again. stupid fuck. our heroic housemate sam chased one of them and called the police, got in their van and caught the bastard!
which is all well and good, but no bikes have emerged so he's already sold it, or one of his cunting mates got there first. Anyway if you see a slightly battered genesis cruising around, with a mismatched back wheel and lots of chips on the top tube do what you will, in the spirit of sam the fearless bike thief catcher.
Cheers.

Found a slightly more recent (ie less than 10 years old) picture of my bike that went missing 3 weeks ago. Still a crap picture mind (phone camera) but at least it shows the whole bike this time. So, this is how it was in 2005 - since then the turn-ups on the end of the bars got sawn off, the bar tape went blue, and so did the tyres. Not much hope of getting back now I suppose - bastard cops couldn't be bothered to look at the footage from the cctv camera at the end of my road.

unlucky mate

yeah, he was quite wary of that. sounded quite slapstick, chasing the bloke till he was well close, then the bloke would turn round and start shouting and sam would slow down, and then start running again. Anyway he's a hard bastard and would have battered the wanker. unless he had a knife i spose.

I know plenty of people who have been unluck enough to have their bikes stolen (one 5 hours after buying it!), and on a few occasions they have been able to get them back from Brick Lane (which has already been suggested) at the weekend, although they have been forced to BUY it back.
The other place to try is http://www.gumtree.com I have been looking for a good secondhand road bike for a while, and most of the adverts i have called about are clearly for stolen bikes, so i have told them where to stick it. I know all these things are a long shot, but it seems that when a good quality bike is stolen they are wise to the fact they can get better money for it, and so seem to take their chances more with an ad online.
Unfortunately the police couldn't give a monkeys about recovering stolen bikes, such is the level of theft in this town, and even if there is a CCTV camera pointing at wher it was stolen from, they won't even check the footage.

redrum why would you pay someone that stole your bike...im sorry but thats just stupid, big hammer was my answer!!!
When you got 5 yoots round ya with baseball caps spitting "cha dis" and "cha dat blud" you'd give them a score to get the wheels back so then they can get some new nappys. Muppets. But if they ask for more than that, yeah redrum- Tump em with a big Hammer. CHEEFS!

hi jontyponty,
i dont hink it was the one thenmate, sorry to get your hopes up. I was offered a bike i have no doubt is stolen from my incredibly dodgy neighbour. Had another look last night, its a dark blue ridgeback racer, size 54, with lots of chips on the top tube. I checked the wheels and they are both the same. It also has a sticker saying what shop it is from. If anyone has lost this bike and knows where it is from let me know.

if someone actually does this in brick lane... you really don't know what those guys are up to and how big is their gang... 3 guys each with 4 ft bolt croppers you better run for your lives
Walt', we feel your pain.
