Not sure if anyone can work this out, but do the majority of posts on this thread relate to bikes stolen at weekends?
My impression is that it is the case but I can’t work out why. -

My nature boy just got stolen :( in central London.
Keep your eyes open - its black & size 58 with dt wheelset and thomson seatpos (see also photos below). I have anti-locks in the wheels which open with a special tool and I have antitheft inserts on the seat post, saddle and callipers.
I pray that whoever stole it did because it was easy to take and once they realise they cannot even fix a flat or change the saddle height they will sell it.

I just saw on Lewisham Cycles' Instagram account that you got this back. Amazing news! What's the story?

• #16434
The story is that someone went to The Cyclery Lewisham with my bike, and the guys there did a search on stolen-bikes uk and found out the bike was stolen. They rang me up and I collected it after approximately 1hr and a half.
The full story is that my bike got stolen on Friday night in Covent Garden outside the racks in front of the COS store, after I forgot to lock it (stupid me, I start texting after I got off the bike and completely forgotten to lock it). After 1hr when I went back, the bike was not there.
There are two scenarios in terms of who stole the bike: Either a "regular" bike thief looking for poorly locked bikes or someone who just saw a bike unlocked and decided to take it.
At this point it is important to note that the bike has anti-theft locks pretty much everywhere, specifically: Abus Nutfix Security Axle Set on the wheels, and hexlox on the seatpost, saddle, disc brakes and steerer. That meant that if the bike was just stolen by not a proper thief they would have a hard time to do anything on the bike, unless skillful enough to grind the locks on the wheels and remove the hexloxs from 7 bolts.
I never met the guy who brought the bike to the store, but he was basically looking to buy new things for his new ride (locks, reflec. vests, etc), and he said he bought the bike from someone (a friend maybe? definitely not online as I was searching throughout the whole internet every 2hours) for a couple of hundred quids. I am not sure why he had to leave the bike to the shop for half an hour, maybe he asked something simple to adjust like the saddle height and the guys saw the anti-theft locks (which he didn't mentioned?), or maybe the guys from the shop found it suspicious that someone just bought this bike (very custom ride and not your usual brand/model) as a first ride and found an excuse to keep it, and search for it online. That part of the story is a bit unknown to me... When the guy went back to collect the bike they told him it was reported as stolen and could not give it back to him. He understood and left. That's all I know.
The fact that I reported the bike stolen online was definitely helpful. Maybe also the fact that I had put a reward. Maybe also the fact that I had all these anti-theft locks, which forced the buyer who had no idea on how to remove them (and maybe assuming they were just bolts requiring a regular tool) to get it to a bike shop or maybe I am just very luck in the unfortunate event of someone stealing it in the first place (also bike was untouched when I got it back).

Nice to hear a recovery story, which anti-theft bolts do you have btw?

Good stuff.
Lots of shops will search online for a specific bike being stolen if someone a bit dodge comes in, however as you say, if you quickly cannot attain whether it is or is not stolen you lose your chance to grab it back.
Uk should just have one single stolen bike website for reporting, finding and tracing original owners.
Police are less than useless as they give folk who aren't aware of the pathetic joke that our legal system is, false hope that something will happen without their own direct positive action.
Today learnt that a local thief, finally had their day in court 4 years after the arrest was made and charges brought against them, was basically thrown out with no formal charges Brought. In those 4 years since "that" theft they have been taking several a week I for sure, for years, and nothing basically ever happens, the turmoil and misery Brought to so many by one miserable little sad sack is unreal. -

thrown out with no formal charges Brought
so depressing.
what's the go to for bike shops checking for stolen rides? I guess bike register?
a few years ago I asked at a cash converters style shop if they check for stolen bikes before putting them up for sale. I was told they make a note of the frame number and keep the bikes in the basement for a couple of weeks to see if the numbers flag up as stolen by the police before they go on the shop floor.

Urban Arrow Family Performance Line CX stolen from outside 402 Westmount Road, SE9 today (15/04/2023) at 10:20-10:30 AM whilst I walked the dogs. Angle grinder used to cut through 16mm Pragmasis Chain. Video footage from house nearby doesn't capture the bike but angle grinder can clearly be heard.
Please keep an eye out - photos below. Bike had the rain cover on when stolen as well as a carradice rack bag. The shark sticker was removed after these photos taken.

They are Hexlox inserts, they should do the trick outside but I am pretty sure if someone tries to removes these after a bike is stolen at their own patience, they would be able to do it.

And reposting for new page. Sorry for spam.
Thanks
EDIT - differences are white fizik Antares saddle, silver inline Thomson seatpost, silver nitto bullmoose bars, white DMR flat pedals with cinelli straps.
Bars and seatpost had hexlox in the nuts. Front wheel not stolen so you may see it with a different wheel.

A couple of days after posting my Dolan above I’m back. Yesterday evening my mate was out for dinner, he had a brick put through his window of his flat in hackney and he’s had these 4 bikes stolen - 2 canyons and 2 aeroads. Please if anyone see any of them get in touch. The aeroad is pretty unique, rim brake, rare paint scheme. Think it was likely a Katusha frame without the sponsors. Anyway, any help hugely appreciated.
Cheers

That's insane :( those are stunning bikes.
Someone mentioned the police are useless. Sadly the police don't have resources ready to go at the drop of a hat. They are often tied up with a queue of mental health, concerns, missing people, robberies, burglaries, prisoners, filework, car crashes, fights, criminal damage, sickness cover, training, stabbing, etc etc etc.
All with minimal staffing.
