Audax rides

  • Oh and I missed my 10-hour target time by 15 mins, but was actually quite pleased at having done it so fast. Maybe that's why it was more knackering, because I did it 1-2 hours faster than normal...

  • Did a London to Brighton yesterday. Wasn't Audax or a perm but it was a nice day and great to be back in the saddle for longer ride (longer than commuting) after what felt like ages: 5th of December.

Part of me wants to do RRtY again but this time as a double parallel one. Something like one calendar and one perm every month. But then you are under pressure and have to ride when you don't feel like riding. That did take the joy out of it at times. But the fact that I did complete it and knowing that I am capable of it makes me want to raise the bar. Is it just madness? Is it the mountaineer mentality?

Other than that an SR is on the list for 2016.

  • Failed to finish the Exe-Buzzard 600 on the weekend. Nothing wrong with body, Garmin got into a boot loop and I couldn't resume using the route sheet. Game over.

  • Extended Calendar Events - is there something similar for Perms or does that whole ride then come under the rules of a DIY?

  • Anyone else in for The Poor Student on Saturday?

  • Entries have closed. I just emailed the organiser to see if there's any spots.

  • There's one in Tewkesbury on the same day..

  • I have an entry and will be on the train out of Marlyebone at 0625.

  • I forgot about actually entering it and only checked this morning. Will see what he says.

  • Can you ride a DIY or Perm version of a Calendar event on the same date as the calendar event, I wonder?

ie. I could ride out, ride the Poor Student route, ride home and claim a 400k DIY?

  • I forgot about actually entering it and only checked this morning. Will see what he says.

Limits on ride numbers are usually there to stop the controls getting swamped. If you mention you're likely to be in the front group then you'll probably get in as you'll be out of the first control by the time the main field arrive.

Similarly the ECE coordinators will do all they can to help you try and add an extra 200k onto a ride, AUK wants more people to ride longer and longer distances, not try and invent tricky regulations to make it difficult (you get enough shit from Garmin as it is).

  • Thats my fear #3 with my Edge 810, really considering trying a TwoNav or good old Edge 500. (#1 is indigestion, #2 is injury)

  • The route for that one sounds good, will be pretty. I'm just down the road from the M40 south services right now and have relatives in Bredon (just outside Tewkesbury). I could be tempted to stay the night with them and do it but the weather looks crap and I've spent more than enough time with relatives over Christmas ;)

  • About 4min after he said I was first reserve, he had his first DNS. (I wasn't holding a blade to their throat, honest).

  • Never heard of TwoNav. What's their story?

Bryton Rider 50 was mentioned as a Garmin alternative in the GPS thread.

I thought about using a 510 or 520 - reduced functionality in the hope it works but these seem to suffer similar issues.

  • I thought about riding out doing it and riding back... ~600k ECE. But unless I have about 14 different GPS devices I'm not doing that kind of thing again.

  • No extending a perm not even for Tante Käthe.

  • How about you change your strategy and get receipts?

  • Get an OS map you drongo. Laminate it. Proper Audax style.

  • Receipts don't help me navigate.

  • Or, I could just ride sportives, twice.

If I start in an early wave, I could probably finish two loops before the stragglers get in and the signs are taken down :)

  • Weather is looking amazing for tomorrow. Currently in two minds about whether I can be bothered.

  • It's just a little damp. I might take the road bike out rather than the TT. Because mudguard.

  • Soggy but fun final round of RRtY spent mostly following @scultura

Also a bit on the spendy side - guess which dickhead forgot to pay for parking? £50 fine (if paid early). Ouch. I knew I should've ridden out.

  • Oh shit what a pisser!

I went to the pub instead, last night and today. Willy Warmer will be the next one for me.
