Audax rides

  • Yeah the devil is always a good shout :)

And the perm route (unless it's changed) takes it past a really nice little cafe on the return leg, loads of chickens/ducks etc just roaming around outside

  • I've done the Ditchling Devil as a perm. The only perm I rode last year. DIY by GPS. Means that you don't need to collect receipts (but probably good as a backup) and you can stop whenever you like.

  • If I had thought about this more thoroughly in advance I could made the Dunwich Dynamo into a DIY. Ah well.

  • I did the Boat Ride Perm again this morning. Bit happier with how it went today - over an hour faster and didn't feel like shite for most of it. That was including the stop to film the red arrows doing their thing over Silverstone I guess. Feckon warm out there - came in 3.5kg lighter having taken on 4L during so ~1L/hour sweat rate. Don't usually see it that high in the UK!

  • Just reserved* my place on LEL 2017 as I volunteered during 2013. No idea when general registration opens, probably mid 2016.

slvlss adventures during 2016, possibly including a bash at the Mersey Roads 24 (probably on fixed, unsupported and >500km), and then some Audaxing in the summer and over the winter and into 2017.

    * You can only do this if you received an email from them if you volunteered during LEL 2013 or contributed to the MadeGood LEL 2013 film.

  • Anyone thinking of doing the National 400? Looks like a lovely route tho could obviously have dodgy weather, only problem I'm thinking of is getting to the start for 10 in the morning??

  • Where is the start?

  • Dingwall in Scotchland, a bit north of Inverness, at 10am on Saturday 25th July (week after the Mersey Roads 24).

  • DNS'd the Devil's Punchbowl on Sunday even though I had booked it weeks ago. Just didn't fancy the overnight stay on Saturday. So I made up for it yesterday by riding the Boat Trip perm. Lovely route but with a few scary main road sections. Got caught in a rain shower a couple of times and showered in bugs too. Pretty much flat aside from a couple of steep ones towards the end. Fairly good road surfaces and very quiet too. Like where the hell did everyone go? Didn't bother stopping at the last control but then realised that I only had a couple of small pork pies and a snickers. So I ran on that till I got home, which involves teaching a yoga class on the way.

Haven't submitted my .gpx file yet but sure it's going to be fine otherwise I have a few days to get my July ride in.

Been wanting to do this ride for ages and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a perm near London.

  • I thought I might have unfollowed this thread, but it's just been quiet.

You've kind-of inspired me to have crack at RRTY, arup. I was thinking of starting it in Nov to get the bed bits out of the way first though...

Could also treat myself to some new audax wheels while I'm at it. I've decided mine are touring wheels and therefore utterly unsuitable!

Can you repeat a perm on RRTY?

  • Can you repeat a perm on RRTY?

Yes, you can use the same perm each month with no problems.

  • Except, I imagine, psychological problems by month 12?

  • Most people prepared to sit on their bike for ~10 hours alone are more likely to be immune to such problems.

  • Yeah, I checked that rule out before doing the Boat Ride two weeks on the trot, earlier this year. Not sure either have been fully validated yet though.

  • I did experience some boredom yesterday. Felt like a bit of a box ticking exercise and was having doubts about the whole RRtY thing. Something like why I was still doing this if I've done it so many times already. Answer: because I really like it. But it wore off after a couple of hours and I was enjoying the scenery again. I also stopped at the designated controls to give it that calendar ride feel.

I started RRtY in January and it has meant that I've got those months out of the way and also put me in good shape for when the weather got nicer. You just sort of stay topped up as it were fitness wise. The best part about getting fitter is that you can ride out to events rather than relying on trains; something I wouldn't have considered last year.

  • My 200 second time this year. Mind you I have done Down to Downs four times.

  • Just entered the Around Weald Odyssey on the 15th of August. 300km starting from Redhill.

  • Have emailed the organiser hoping to get a late place on the Flitchbikes 200k this Saturday as I unexpectedly have a free day last minute, otherwise think I might do the Ditchling Devil as a perm instead.

Entered Around Weald in a few weeks and also Tim's University Challenge in September.

Smashed my best 200 time on Saturday just gone, keen to do another one this weekend and see if I can better it.

  • I looked for any 2-300ks for this weekend but can't find anything so I'll either do another Boat Ride or more likely just head out for my own loop. #csb

  • I do want to do boat ride again at some point but ditchling devil I can pick up closer to home. Think i am right in thinking I can start at any point?

  • Yeah, pretty sure that's ok.

  • Is anyone doing Greenwich Mean Climb? Tempted to sign up but it has 3000m more climbing than the last 300 I did. Bit intimidating to say the least!

  • This should be another fine day out from AC Hackney.
