Gosh. Thanks for that. So very much in line with its traditional roots then. Sounds like it'll be more like a group DIY. Shame it can't be done via GPS rather than collecting receipts. Yes, I'd definitely like to see how I cope with the sleep deprivation. It's what I've been reading about when people come to take on their first 400. Keep pushing the boat out each ride.

Got a 400 lined up, arup?

My goals this year were to have a crack at the RRtY and try a 300. I've got my eye on a 2nd 300 (Oasts and Coasts) at the end of April. But as 300 will be the furthest that I've ridden I wanted to try that first before looking at a 400. And take on board all the the variables - fitness, food, weather, sleep and above all mental attitude.
I was however discussing the idea of doing the Dunwich Dynamo this year, which I've never ridden and thought perhaps if I'm fit enough by then to also ride back making it a 400. But that's not till July. There are few listed on the 9th of May which would fit into my calendar. I'm also less fearful of hills and even starting to like them (a bit) due to riding my hilly 100k training ride into Kent and doing those longer rides on fixed.
But I'm not jumping ahead. I want to see the evidence of a 300 completed before I book on a 400 or even consider it.
Talking of fixed. I'm wondering about doing this 300 on fixed so that I can have my pannier full of gear. Route looks fairly flat. Hmm.

Dun Run ride home is lonely and quite dull, the only reason I didn't pack on mine was I was riding with someone else and didn't want to bail on them (they felt the same way, luckily we didn't communicate this during the ride home).
Pan flat (1000m climb in 300km qualifies as that) on fixed is more painful on the arse as you never have a reason to be out of the saddle. Still, it's easier than launching into something stupid as a first 300 on fixed.

3 down done.
First 300km it was good the head wind from 150k to 300km was character building.
Learnt so much.
Definitely need to gear down.
Oats and Coast is next then Severn across! -
• #3457
Fair play, for some reason I thought you'd already done some of the longer rides.

Yeah, after waiting for everyone to leave so I could park the car in the other carpark and walk back to the HQ, I managed to get lost (screw you Garmin and screw you brain for taking so long to notice the mistake) on the 3Down so added about 34k to my ride before I even made the first checkpoint! I guess that helped shape my 'mood' so I then went about hammering the rest of the way trying to make up the time. I came in around 7th which isn't bad considering I'd given everyone except Marin a 2hr head start. "It's not a race... unless it is a race". Good training and an April audax so 3/12 for RRtY if I carry on.

"It's not a race... unless it is a race"
Sportives: Pretending you're racing
Audax: Pretending you're not -

Excellent work there!
I got back to the base at 9
Then headwinds on the return leg was character building.
I am doing oats and Coast this month. I wi cycling to and from the start. Making it a 360km not 300km. If all goes to plan I will do the Severn across -
• #3461
I'm away so can't do Oasts, but I've just entered the Severn Across. Will probably do the Beast from the East for my 600k. Can't be bothered with sorting out the BCM entry, logistics, etc.

Just noticed this. Anyone got GPS for it? 2hr drive to the start and back could be a bit rough but it'd get a 400k out of the way early..
"Buckingham Blinder
400km cycling event starting from Coryton, NW Cardiff. Controls at Village Hotel, Coryton, Cardiff, Malmesbury, Long Hanborough, Buckingham, Garden Centre, Long Hanborough and Malmesbury.
An event for the experienced and self-sufficient. Fairly fast route and an early start mean you should cover most of the ride in daylight. X-rated event, No sleep facilities provided."

Oh no I have a room for three

For BCM? Oh, did I say I was doing that? Shit, I can't keep track any more.
-
• #3465
Yes BCM. No I always said you should.
-
• #3466
I finished within the time limit which isn't bad considering I'd given everyone except Marin a 2hr head start.

Hey it was the helpers that told me I was seventh back, otherwise I'd have had no idea.
FYI: I am 'racing' these - it's how I motivate myself to ride them hard rather than enjoying the scenery and lounging about in cafes. They're acting as training for me for my longer TTs. I will try and 'win' the next one just like I try and 'win' my commutes or I 'win' the 'race' up the stairs or 'win' my shuffle for the bus or any other little internal competitions I arrange for myself. Other people must do this, right? No one else need be aware of my challenge to only use every third stair and beat that guy in the blue suit to the top of the escalators...

Is it full yet? What crazy voodoo do I need to perform to enter it? shudders at thought of logistics

Book room at Bristol Severn View M48 for Friday night. Take train to Bristol on Friday. Change train or ride to the pub in Aust. Drink beer. Sleep. Ride. Sleep. Ride. Have more beer on Sunday morning. Ride. Smash course record. Take the train home. Bring lights.

Grow a beard.

• #3471
I have a beard. Does it need to be a certain length? I guess longer is better in the world of audax?
-
• #3472
The BCM starts in Bristol? Man, I know nothing!
It's hilly right? There will be no course record breaking. Some crazy fool bought in a pile of lovely chocolates from Greece. They're worse than crack..

"GPS is fine but we have had people blindly following their GPS and not havinga clue where they were (I mean literally – not knowing if they were going North or South or what towns they should be looking for)."
Sounds just like me. I'm not sure I should be doing something like the BCM if I get lost doing a ride in my own stomping ground that I've done before!
-
• #3474
Towns in Wales? They are pulling your leg. Would say it is undulating not hilly.

It doesn't matter about the terrain. What matters is how many days elapse before I realise I've ridden into Scotland or something.
The 'x' rating usually means it's a barebones event in that, apart from the start, none of the controls will be manned by anyone; they'll probably all just be receipt collections and maybe a postal finish. Other reasons it can be 'x' rated is that food may not be available at every control, so it's up to the rider to make sure they've got enough.
Indeed, the early Audaxes in this country often had no routesheets or nominated controls. The organiser just gave the riders a list of towns they had to visit and get proof-of-passage in. It was up to the individual riders to pick their own route and then find somewhere to stock up along the way whilst getting a receipt or a stamp/signature.
The start time of the Green and Yellow Fields will definitely contribute to its 'experienced riders' warning. You've got to know how you deal with sleep deprivation in order to do a ride like this, it can affect people in very different ways and falling asleep whilst riding isn't particularly fun (I last did that on the A7). It's amazing what a 15 minute power nap can do though.
Worth doing a ride like this just to see how you cope with it. I know loads of people who can do 200s and 300s (with a ~6am start time) but fall apart on anything longer as they just can't handle riding through a night.
