Audax rides

  • If it starts at 8am (which it does) does that mean that your man's going to hold the final control open until 10:24pm

Yes, but I'd expect to be in the pub by 6pm!

  • Cheers both of you.

I found this handy calculator on AUK as well.

  • Very keen on the Chris Negus, and it looks fairly easily train-able from London. Also quite like the look of New Forest / IoW ones on 1 September, though looks like you'd have to get down the day before. I suppose if you were keen you could ride some / all of way down.

  • Using my magic maths that's a maximum time limit of 216/15 = 14.4h for the whole thing.

I've just had a thought - I'm pretty sure the time limit is capped for the 200km, so 200km / 15. With the addititional 16km its just 'overdistance' and you just need to find the time within the time limit.

The main killers for time I find are the controls, especially when they involve a cafe or something - we've done plenty of 200's in 12hrs, and I always wondered why we were so slow, but it's all the bloody controls! (and hills...)

  • I'm quite keen on that Isle of Wight one. Just been looking at trains and there isn't anything early enough to get there for 07:45. I was thinking about getting a tent as there are campsites in the New Forest. But obviously depends on the weather. Think is, I hate camping. But I do like cycling so a small sacrifice perhaps. Route looks gorgeous.

  • If you any of you are free during the week http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/13-275/
    Wednesday 14th from Maidenhead. 100k.

  • Looking to do my first Audax - will look into doing the Boulters Bash, even though it is midweek. Not many rides left this season, can anyone suggest anything else I should be looking at pre-september. Want something in the ~100km range.

  • I'd definitely recommend the Tour of The Hills 108km

Lots of climbing but worth it for the lovely scenery :)

  • Having now done Dunwich and feeling quite pleased with myself on hitting (nearly) 200k without feeling too mashed, my thoughts are turning to 200k audaxes and the speeds required.

So I'm down for the Chris Negus Memorial 200k in September which says it's 216km and with a speed of 15-30kph. Using my magic maths that's a maximum time limit of 216/15 = 14.4h for the whole thing.

If it starts at 8am (which it does) does that mean that your man's going to hold the final control open until 10:24pm?

I know this sounds blindingly obvious but it's not actually mentioned anywhere on the AUK site as far as I can tell.

You can probably walk it in that time

    It isn't that simple.

If the ride is marked as BRM (Brevet Randonneur Mondiaux), which this ride isn't, then it gets a set time limit (13h30 for a 200, 20h for a 300, 27h for a 400, 40h for a 600, 75h for a 1000, 90h for a 1200, 116h40 for a 1400). This is because the ride is a fully fledged Audax that's validated by Audax Club Parisienne (or LRM if it's >1000km). There's no extra time for overdistance rides.

If the ride is BR (but no M) then it's only validated by the UK and there's extra wiggle room. Organisers can choose a lower minimum speed of 14.3kph, but this one hasn't, so it's 15kph.

It then comes down to the distance and there's more complication. Each Audax has 3 distances:-

    • The nominal ride distance (200km, 300km, 400km, etc)
    • The shortest distance between controls
    • The routesheet distance

The routesheet distance is used in the calendar so that people aren't annoyed when they enter a 200km ride and find it's 216km.

But the ride times are often calculated on the shortest distance between controls, this will be somewhere between 200km and 216km and you won't know in advance.

If you really need to know then email the organiser and ask, they should be able to give you an answer pretty quickly.

  • Just sent off for my Fixed Wheel Challenge card - a £1 seems as though it wouldn't cover half the admin the organiser needs to put in for this, so I included a note to say the effort was much appreciated.

That said, I may be being a bit previous here: fixed is current in bits, and unlikely to be fettled in time for The Summer Knows next weekend: http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/13-279/ (100km starting from Brigg, just South of The Humber Bridge, ambling 'round North-East Lincolnshire).

  • Having never ridden an Audax, can I just pay the entrance fee and ride or do I have to join the Audax club?

  • You can just pay and ride but there's often (always?) a small surcharge for non members. Usually like £2 or something.

  • Thanks for that, the Tour of the Hills looks good so I will enter

Always (it's to cover 3rd party insurance costs).

Also no surcharge if you're a CTC member.

No other membership avoids the surcharge even if it provides 3rd party coverage. The organisers can't be expected to work out whether some other random 3rd party insurance covers the right things that need to be covered for an Audax. It's either AUK membership, CTC membership or a £2 surcharge.

  • Just been doing my packing for Super Brevet Scandinavia (on of the 1200s). All of a sudden it looks really scary and up close.

I know I should be OK on it but all of a sudden I'm finding little shit to worry about when I should be sleep banking. Not usual for me, but then, neither is a big ride in three countries I've never been to before.

  • Have sent my entry off for Chris Negus too.

I wish I'd have known about this one.. the route looks really cool. Deffo one for next year!

  • ^^^Good luck!

Quite difficult due to rather limited spaces. I was very lucky. As with most 1200's/Super Brevets, This one runs on a four year cycle. Not sure when bur ACP will publish a calendar of internationally recognised rides including the long ones. The temptation of India, Mongolia, Korea et al is quite strong.

    Arse.. DIY it is then!

  • Last call for the Old 240 this weekend? any takers?

Failing that, I'd recommend the Tour of the Hills 100km from Surrey on Sunday, I wonder if I could make it back to do both.... I doubt it.

  • ^Challenge! ;)

  • Is anyone else doing Boulters Bash tomorrow?

  • I was planning on it but have had to pull out due to work. He's accepting entries on the line.
