It's one of the bikes Marco Pantani used in the TDF in 1998. It's how he had it set up. Down tube shifter for front derailleur, brifter for rear. 24 spoke rims.

Chain stays for seat stays. Seems like the right choice if you're building custom for a very heavy rider.

It's probably Pantani his bike, seeing the sloping geometry. It isn't a correct build to be either his TDF or Giro bike though. His bike was equipped with Aluminium levers in both those races, as well as a PMP titanium seatpost.
