^I fail to understand bikes like that. (not calling it anti or whatever, but, what are you supposed to do on a HUGE uphill, as it is in fairness, a mtb. Go home and get your other bike?)

• #94040
It's not a mountainbike but a cyclocross bike? So it's SSCX?
-
• #94041
ok, but surely someone getting/buying/building a cyclocross bike would choose to have gears, for the versatility factor!
-
• #94042
what are you supposed to do on a HUGE uphill
Sling it over your shoulder and run
-
• #94043
It's often faster to run with MTB uphill technical stuff than riding it

Well depends on the race. Some races offer "bonus points" for single speed. Besides that it can be easier for some people. Less focusing on the gears and more on the power output and trying to win. And if it's versatility, this is a bike forum. Every decent rider must have at least one:
Pub bike / rat bike
Track only bike
Fixed crit bike
Full race bike
Triathlon or Timetrial bike
Cyclocross or Singlespeed Cyclocross bike
MountainbikeAnd that's just the minimum. The correct number of bikes to own is n+1

would still choose gears
[cough]
-
• #94048
Less focusing on the gears and more on the
power outputline that doesn't end you in a bush, ditch, swamp or tree.ftfy

Climbing technique. Learn you will. Or as others have said, pick up the bike and run.
I want the orange SSCX
