It was actually the name given by fisher and Kelly to the company they started which sold their first 'proper' off road bikes....it then got quickly adopted as the term to describe all others that then followed.
Prior to them starting that company they weren't known as MTB's."Mountain Bike"
The Gospel according to Wikipedia states that the repack crew used "my mountain bike" to differentiate between what they rode on Mt Tam and what they rode on pavement. This may or may not be the case; at the time I was two thousand miles away and considering puberty, so could not confirm or deny the assertion.

But it wasn't the definitive term for the bikes at that point...they all still called them by various other names such as clunkers, beaters, bombers, etc, it wasn't until fisher and kelly started to sell the Ritchey built bikes under the name Mountain Bikes that it finally stuck as the definitive term to describe that particular type of bike.

This DVD covers mtb history very well. I'd certainly recommend it.

Not aimed at you, just needed to voice my disappointment at kierin racing.
Thank f*ck you did, if there's something this thread/forum needs is more initiative like yours.
Just can't get my head around on how has Keirin racing "disappointed" you...? -

It must be the Japanese!
Those slant eyed fucks!

Oh dear

thought it may be a sporting contest, like the keirin we are used to here in europe. however, turns out it is takeshi's castle on wheels
-
• #70888
Are you familiarized with Japanese Culture at all? (Genuine question...)
And furthermore, are you genuinely informed on how/why/how come Keirin is the way it is in Japan, what it represents, and so on...? And on this matter, what NJS is, what it stands for, and why/what/how come it exists? -
• #70889
yes

Cool. So you're just not into the whole thing. Which is fine.
But it is definitely not Takeshi's Castle on wheels. It's a Sporting event as you've mentioned.
A quite important and serious one, within Japanese culture/society, since it's the only legal way of betting.
NJS is they're bureau of control over every single component used on track racing. That's it.
Westerners made it what it is. A fucken circus.
Japanese are Japanese, Their Keirin is merely a reflection of the whole lot.
IMHO that's what makes it great. -

Yes during a sales embargo in the late mid 2000 japan had to introduce a hipster tax on anodized bike parts being shipped to Europe. It's called NJS and it's stamped on everything they send to bike enthusiasts abroad

Nicely put Nuknow. Although you could replace "keirin" by "Takeshi's Castle" in your post and some phrases would still make sense.

Not sure if this is ignorance, trolling, poorly timed sarcasm or a misplaced sense of humour... whichever way I don't appreciate it.

No, no, no -- it is just pure hatred for everything foreign!
Be disgusted!

Monday morning...
Gotta love Mondays.
I really can't remember what started me off :-)
I think I'll quietly retreat from the bike porn arena & settle down in a more sedate part of the forum.
