It makes a difference to total capacity, but not to maximum sprocket. If the Rival is made to shift at all onto the big (32t ?) sprocket, it will be too far from the small sprockets to shift optimally in the high gears. It's probably worse with SRAM than with Shimano, due to the lack of a B-spring.
Aside from providing proper shifting all the way across a wide range cassette, the MTB dérailleurs have a much cleaner cable path, which I'd want even more on a CX bike than I do on a road bike, and I think my SRAM road bikes would be better with X0-DH short cage dérailleurs.

I'd have thought the X7 would also have a stronger springs and more tension (helping keep the chain on). Rival is an odd choice.
