I didn't realise droughts could occur in the world of bike porn, but this is most certainly a drought.

Your etymological ignorance astounds me.
Please explain to me how "spokes are gay" translates to a fear of homosexuals?
Gay is a word (a noun or an adjective) that primarily refers to a homosexual person. The term was originally used to refer to feelings of being "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy"; it had also come to acquire some connotations of "immorality" as early as 1637.
There you go. I'm not scared of homosexuals nor used the term "gay" as a pejorative. But those spokes are immoral.
Since you're discussing it here as well as pming me about it I'll add my 2 cents.
Gay = homosexual.
Saying that something that you think is bad, abnormal or you don't approve of is gay = you think homosexuals/homosexuality is bad, abnormal you don't approve etc.
You might not be scared of homosexuals but using the word gay as you did (and thinking it's anything other than pejorative) shows how ignorant you are.

FWIW, I don't like the gaily coloured spokes on that Cracknfail, but I think they would only have a queer connotation if they were pink or rainbow coloured. So they are gay, but not gay.
Also, writing 'ghay' or 'ghey' as a euph. for the pejorative use of 'gay' is totally ghaey.

There's a thin line between clever and stupid. I think Nuvinci crossed it.

Queer
adjective- strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint; unusually different; singular:
You obviously have little experience of wheel building if you think that. Radial front/crossed rear is quite common.

Mines just cleared customs. So I'll let you know. I certainly plan to use it in a stupid manner.

Where did they cross it? Efficiency, complexity?

Both of those, and searching for a solution to a problem which doesn't exist. Nobody can tell reliably whether a cadence variation of 10% affects biomechanical efficiency, so there is no call for a gear system with jumps smaller than that. CVT probably does make it easier to automate gear changing, for people too stupid to work out for themselves when they're slogging/spinning out.

Ah, but it's the thought of smooth gear changes while accelerating hard that gets me dreaming of CVTs.
