I can never remember the reasoning. But when you think they're only on the rack for a couple of minutes any discomfort is overcome by whatever benefits there are to be gained. The shoes come off as soon as they're off the bike.

I don't wear socks for cycling in warm weather - my shoes are comfortable without.

I am also as powerful as Hoy so must be something in it.
