Not taking sides here, but why on earth would anyone want/decide to go out to the woods in the middle of the night during/after heavy snow?
Snow rides, when you don't HAVE to go somewhere, are a blast.
Even more so at night. -

What was the name of the really old school Idita biker - I remember an MBUK article on him in the 90's.
Rode a Ritchey frame I think, big beard, trained by running up and down skyscrapers. 'Intense' would probably describe him.
John Stamstad.

For what it's worth though...I do like a lively discussion from time to time. ;]

Jersey, you're making yourself look like a dick here. Just because you can't understand why someone would want something, doesn't mean that it's a "stupid novelty" for a "complete tool".
There are plenty of (sensible) people who think it's retarded and impractical to ride a fixed pursuit frame with disc wheels that cost more than a small car, on the the streets of London. I personally think trick bikes are stupid, but I know that just because I don't want one doesn't mean they're without value to someone else..

you obviously haven't tried it ;)
Getting out in the harshest of winters, in the snow and ice, on your bike, with lights, and the other guys, in the woods*, miles from anywhere....who wouldn't want that ;)
*might as well be alien woods as no matter how much you kid yourself it always feels totally different at night, then snow is a whole new ball game again. Your meant to embrace winter otherwise the snow queen will smite thee.

Best for what?... Honestly not getting this.
It's like normal mtbing but if you get it all wrong it hurts less and you end up laughing because you're 3ft deep in snow. When you're actually trying to get from A>B it's not so funny though

Mate, were I live that could be 3 in the afternoon in winter. Plus if you get a stable period of -10 or below. That fresh looking snow could be weeks old.
Winter lasts 5 months sometimes for me, and I'm fecked if I'm staying away from off-roading, running, road riding etc. for that long. It takes an investment in equipment, and trial and error for what works for you. But up here they say.
"det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær"
Which basially means ther isnt such a thing as bad weather just bad clothes. extend this to equipment. I cover decent winter road miles on my spike tyred CX based tourer/commuter. I'd like to extend that to trails. Maybe the fatbike isnt the answer, I dont honestly know. But it interests me.

The question is, why not?
I'd love to give it a try, sure it may be hard work, sure it'll be bloody cold, sure it's diffcuilt to see.
But is it a challenge? fuck yeah.

The "average" human would not have much use for this either.
Oh... so it is an activity!? Fair enough. Resume arguing.
